Since It’s Already Like This Chapter 12

As soon as the door opened, the smell of coffee hit me, followed by the soft meows of several cats.

Before I had even sat down, a cat jumped onto the table and rubbed its head against my palm.

“You really like animals, don’t you, Indigo?”

Ethan sat down beside me, a hint of pride in his voice.

“I remember you used to volunteer at the animal shelter all the time in college.”

“One time, it was pouring rain, and you were crouched outside the library making a shelter out of a cardboard box for a stray cat. You got completely soaked.”

I froze.

I had forgotten all about that.

But he remembered.

The chubby cat rubbed against my hand, purring contentedly.

I couldn’t help but laugh.

The weight that had been pressing on my chest for days finally began to lift.

I really did love animals.

But Lowell was allergic to cat fur.

So I had never gone to a place like this with him.

Later, when I started working and could have afforded a pet, I gave up the idea because of him.

When I returned to New York, the plane had just landed when I got a call from a coworker.

“Indigo, you finally picked up.”

“There’s a man here claiming to be your boyfriend. He’s been sitting in the lobby all morning and refuses to leave, no matter what anyone says.”

When I got to the office, Lowell was still sitting there.

It had only been a few days, but he already looked exhausted.

His shirt was wrinkled, stubble shadowed his jaw, and the dark circles under his eyes were heavy.

The moment he saw me, he shot to his feet.

“Indy, you’re back.”
