Mira looked at me, her expression still etched with worry.

But in the end, she followed Lowell to the checkout counter.

I stood there and watched them go, a hollow feeling spreading through my chest.

Lowell had never gone shopping with me.

He always said malls were too tiring, too much of a hassle.

“If you need something, can’t you just order it online? Why do you have to go yourself?”

But now, here he was, carrying a pile of things for Mira without a single complaint.

After they left the mall, Lowell loaded everything into the trunk.

Mira was already in the passenger seat. She rolled down the window and waved at me.

Lowell said, matter-of-factly, “Get in. I’ll drive you both back.”

My gaze landed on the front seat.

A sticker on the dashboard read “Queen Seat.”

Lowell frowned, impatience creeping into his voice.

“Mira’s back is bad. The front seat is more comfortable. You sit in the back.”

He remembered all of Mira’s habits.

He remembered her bad back. He remembered she felt unwell every month.

But he somehow couldn’t remember that I had hurt my own back moving heavy boxes for my last move.

My nose stung, but I forced the feeling down. “No, thanks. I’m not going that way.”

Mira reached for her seat belt.

“Indy, don’t say things you don’t mean. If you don’t want me sitting up front, I’ll get out.”

But Lowell pressed her hand down and said coldly, “If it’s not on the way, then forget it. Let’s go.”

The moment he finished speaking, the car drove off.

With me, Lowell never seemed to have much patience.
