I took a small step forward, looking directly into her eyes.

She trembled all over.

I looked at her and softened my voice slightly.

“But you never had to prove that to anyone.”

“If you had just been honest back then, maybe we really could have been sisters.”

“But you chose another path. And I chose mine.”

It was as if I had peeled her open, layer by layer.

In the end, only the hollow core remained.

“You think you’ve won?” she suddenly screamed. “You haven’t won anything! Father still loves me! Ethan still believes me! Everyone in Washington knows I’m the perfect Walton daughter!”

“That’s good,” I said. “You can have them. I don’t need them.”

I watched her being taken away.

I watched the person who had once been able to shatter my entire world with a single look disappear into the rain.

There was no turbulence in my heart.
