“Eliza, can you come to my office?”

When I entered the dean’s office, she gestured for me to sit, her expression serious.

“Your family has contacted the university,” she said. “They claim there is an extremely urgent family matter and hope you will video call them immediately. They were very forceful.”

“Dean,” I said calmly, “my family has a long history of mistaking control for concern. This isn’t an emergency. They are using the school to pressure me.”

She was clearly taken aback.

“Eliza, they said this concerns your sister’s health. That because of you, she is… extremely emotionally unstable.”

“Savannah is my parents’ adopted daughter,” I corrected. “She has parents and a brother with her. She does not need me. As for my supposed emotional issues, that has always been a convenient label used by my father’s team.”

“I understand this may be complicated, but the university also has a responsibility—”

“The university’s responsibility is to protect the autonomy of its adult students.” I looked at her. “I am an adult. The university has no authority to force me to speak with anyone, including my family. If the school continues to pressure me on their behalf, I will have to involve my lawyer.”

The office fell silent.

Dean Albright looked at me, her expression slowly shifting from surprise to thoughtfulness.

After a long moment, she nodded.

“All right. I understand. The university will not force you to take this call. I will inform your family that the school respects your decision. I will also create a written record of this matter to ensure your rights as a student are not interfered with.”

She paused.

“If you need help—whether it’s legal aid or psychological support—my door is open.”

“Thank you, Dean.”

I stood and left the office.

The sunlight in the hallway was bright.

I stood by the window and took a deep breath of Oregon’s cold, clean air.

I knew this was only the first round.
