“I’m stating the consequences.” I met his gaze. “People who truly care about you don’t use money and control as proof of love. Since you chose to have your attorneys speak to me, we will speak only in legal terms.”

I gave Mr. Davis a look.

He took a document from his briefcase and placed it in the middle of the table.

“What is this?” Father’s legal counsel asked immediately.

Mr. Davis’s tone was level. “This is an addendum to the trust established by Miss Walton’s maternal grandfather, Mr. Morgan. It contains an independent clause, stated very clearly. Once Miss Walton turns eighteen, as long as she can prove she has the ability to live independently and make her own judgments, she may obtain full control over the trust fund under her name without the consent of any guardian.”

He paused, then added, “We have already prepared the relevant materials, including statements from her teachers, her school counselor, and a psychological evaluation. If necessary, they can be submitted to the court at any time.”

Father stared at the document, his face grim.

Ethan finally couldn’t hold back.

“Eliza, why do you have to make things so ugly? We’re family. What you’re doing is humiliating the Walton name.”

I looked at him.

“Ethan, you still don’t get it, do you?”

I pointed at myself.

“Savannah is Father’s favorite publicity story. A rescued, grateful, picture-perfect girl. And I became a liability the moment I refused to keep playing the part they wrote for me.”

I lowered my hand.

“There was never a place for me in this game. So now, I quit.”

I turned to leave.

Behind me came Father’s furious roar.

“Eliza! If you walk out that door today, don’t expect another penny from this family! Tuition, living expenses, anything. You can forget it all!”

I paused and looked back at him.

His face was distorted with anger, like some stranger on television who had nothing to do with me.

Then I walked out.

And I didn’t look back.
