That night, my best friend texted me.

[Get over here. Hot guys everywhere — brooding types, bad boys, golden retrievers. Pick whichever one you want.]

[Nathaniel’s hot, sure, but you’ve been hung up on the same type for too long. Time to remind him you’ve got options.]

She followed up with a string of photos — every single one of them a guy.

[Come ON, Chloe. Get out of the house.]

[Okay.]

I used to turn down every invite like this — bars, parties, bottle service with cute guys. I said no to all of it because of Nathaniel.

Starting tonight, I was done wasting my time.

I got dressed up and came downstairs. Nathaniel was standing by the door.

He took one look at me — the makeup, the dress, the heels — and his expression darkened.

I didn’t stop. I walked right past him, heels clicking, my hips swaying with every step.

Nathaniel didn’t follow. He stood in the shadows, watching me go, silent as a ghost.

Blair Delaney grabbed me the second I walked into the bar, dragged me into a booth, and surrounded me with guys.

Drinks and fruit started appearing on the table. The guys were practically tripping over each other trying to impress me.

“You need to get out more,” Blair said. “What’s the point of sitting at home every night over a guy who can’t even crack a smile?”

That landed harder than I expected. My eyes stung.

She wasn’t wrong. There was no point waiting for someone who didn’t love me.

Blair shoved me toward the nearest guy and pressed my hand flat against his abs.

“Go on, feel that,” she said. “Younger guys just hit different.”

The guy grinned and pulled his shirt up higher, dropping his voice low. “Like what you see, Chloe?”

Not wanting to be outdone, another guy jumped in with a drink. “What about me, Chloe? Don’t I get a turn?”

More of them crowded in after that, all calling my name and falling over each other to get close. The attention made me dizzy.

I was right in the middle of all of it when the hair at the back of my neck prickled. Someone was watching me.

[Oh my God, why is the male lead at the bar? Shouldn’t he be home in bed dreaming about the female lead?]

[Wait — is the male lead crying? His eyes are so red.]

[Crying? Lol, no. He’s just checking whether the side character is faking it to get his attention.]

[He grew up with her, after all. If she backs off for real, things won’t be as weird in front of her parents.]
