They Erased Me, So I Rewrote My Life Chapter 08

“Eliza!”

Bryce’s voice made the entire classroom fall quiet.

He wore St. Anne’s immaculate uniform. His hair was perfectly styled, and his whole posture screamed, *I don’t belong here.*

The whole class looked toward the door.

Mr. Henderson, the agriculture teacher, pushed up his glasses. “Mr. Connally, this is the ag classroom, not your usual haunt.”

“I know, sir.” Bryce answered dismissively, his eyes fixed on me. “Eliza, we need to talk. Why are you here? Do you have any idea what this decision affects?”

I opened my textbook to the page on soil pH and looked down as if I hadn’t heard him.

“Eliza.” His voice rose. “Don’t do this. You can’t just unilaterally—”

“She doesn’t want to talk to you,” a low voice interrupted.

Leo had already stood up and moved between me and Bryce.

He didn’t look back at me. He just looked calmly at Bryce.

Bryce’s eyes went cold. He looked Leo up and down, taking in the overalls, a sneer curling his lip.

“This has nothing to do with you, farm boy.”

“She’s in my class, so it has everything to do with me,” Leo said. “If you want to discuss whatever arrangement your two families made, do it somewhere else. You can leave on your own, or I can help you out.”

The tension at the classroom door snapped taut.

One of them looked like a carefully curated billboard.

The other stood like a tree rooted in the earth.

In the end, Bryce clenched his jaw, shot me a furious look, and turned away.
