They Erased Me, So I Rewrote My Life Chapter 04

Over the next week, I moved into a school dorm.

Ethan became Father’s messenger.

He brought me records from a band I used to love, cookies Mother had supposedly baked herself, and an invitation to the weekend fundraising dinner.

I refused all of it.

Before finals, Father finally gave up the gentle approach.

“Eliza, we need to talk.”

He was sitting in the principal’s office, wearing the same practiced expression he used on television when meeting voters.

I stood in the doorway, looked at him, and waited.

In my last life, I had lived through scenes like this too many times.

“The University of Oregon is not suitable for you.” Father cleared his throat and clasped his hands on the desk. “If you go to a school like that at a time like this, how will the media write about it? This will directly affect my campaign.”

“So?” I asked.

“So I have already spoken with the admissions office. They will be reviewing your application. You will stay in Texas. There are more suitable options here.”

His tone was that of a man granting a pardon.

I almost laughed.

The same old playbook.
