I Sent Him 89 Voice Messages He Sent 89 Transfers Chapter 09

He drove back to the officers’ quarters and kicked open the front door of the Hawthorne residence.

Ivy Thornton was sitting in the living room, chatting with Cole’s grandmother.

When she saw Cole covered in blood, his eyes wild, her face went white.

“Cole, what happened?”

He walked toward her slowly. His eyes were cold as hell.

“It was you.”

His voice was low and rough. Bitter cold.

“You told me Maya Vance was an orphan with no parents.”

“You told me she was only after me for money.”

“You claimed her miscarriage was a lie, and that she only wanted to seize the Hawthorne family’s wealth.”

Ivy’s body started shaking. Her eyes darted away.

“Cole, I… I just love you so much…”

“Love me?” Cole laughed. Crazy and desperate. “You love me, so you lied to me for four years.”

“You claim to love me, yet you stood by and let me misunderstand and torment her.”

“You love me, so you let her die without telling me the truth.”

“Ivy, that’s not love.”

“That’s evil.”

He seized her by the neck and pressed her hard against the wall.

“She’s dead.”

“Maya Vance is dead.”

“Are you happy now?”

Ivy choked, couldn’t breathe. Her face turned red.

Cole’s grandmother screamed and lunged at him, grabbing his arm.

“Cole! Have you lost your mind? Let Ivy go!”

He let go. Ivy collapsed to the floor, coughing hard.

“No one shall allow her to step foot inside the officers’ quarters from this day forward.”

Cole’s voice was ice. No emotion.

“Whoever dares to shelter her will be regarded as my enemy.”

“And you.” He looked at his grandmother, disappointment in his eyes.

“You kept calling her a hen that doesn’t lay.”

“Your grandson’s child passed away four years ago.”

“When she miscarried, your precious son was making Ivy Thornton a cup of milk.”

His grandmother froze. Her face went stiff.

Cole turned and left without looking at anyone.

He went back to the house he’d shared with Maya for four years.

That cold, empty house.

He walked into the bedroom. Opened the closet he’d never opened before.

Inside were just a few of Maya’s clothes.

All faded, worn-out old things. No brand names.

He opened the vanity drawer.

Inside: a cheap tube of lotion, a comb.

And a small velvet box.

Cole picked up the box and opened it.

Inside was the diamond ring he’d saved six months to buy.

Back then, he bought it to propose to her.

But the misunderstanding on their wedding night made him never take it out again.

She’d found it. She’d kept it here all along. Four years.

Cole picked up the ring and slid it gently onto her cold finger.

It fit perfectly.

“Maya, I’m sorry.”

He knelt by the bed, his forehead against the back of her hand. Tears fell silently.

“I’m sorry.”

“I’m sorry.”

He repeated the apology again and again, yet he would never hear a reply from her.

The next day, Cole handled Maya’s affairs himself.

He dressed her in her favorite white dress.

He brushed her hair. Tucked a fresh wild daisy behind her ear.

He carried her ashes to the cemetery, step by step.

As she’d wished, he buried her next to her father, Zeke Vance.

The service was small. Just a few of Zeke’s old soldier friends and neighbors.

No one knew that this young woman who died so quietly was the Commander’s wife.

Cole stood in front of the gravestone in his black dress uniform.

He didn’t cry. He didn’t speak.

He just stood there. Like a statue.

From sunrise to sunset.

His aide told him to go home. He shook his head.

“Let me stay with her a little longer.”

“She’s alone here. She’ll be scared.”

It got dark. The cemetery turned cold and eerie.

Cole still stood there. Motionless.

Rain started falling. Soaked his uniform. Soaked his hair.

He didn’t even notice.

After that day, Cole Hawthorne changed.
