The Mafia Don’s Contract Wife Chapter 02

The Mafia Don’s Contract Wife Chapter 02

Vincenzo arrived in no time, looking as if he’d just left a meeting, a pair of rimless glasses resting on the bridge of his nose.

Tall, broad-shouldered and long-limbed, he stood out prominently in the crowd as he strode over.

As he drew closer, I saw the top button of his dress shirt was undone, revealing a sliver of his collarbone.

It was exactly the spot I’d bitten that night.

Heat flared up the back of my ears, and I quickly looked away.

A passerby carrying beef soup walked past. The heavy greasy scent drifted into my nose, and my stomach churned violently.

I hurried over to a trash can and began retching.

Vincenzo rushed forward at once to steady me.

“Are you alright?”

I was too busy dry-heaving to speak, so I just waved my hand to tell him I was fine.

Once the spell passed and I straightened up, I noticed Vincenzo staring at something in the distance, a faint frown on his face.

Following his line of sight, I saw the sign on the clinic door — Obstetrics and Gynecology Ward.

My heart tightened, and I scrambled to explain.

“The gastroenterology ward is packed. This is the only area with empty seats.”

Vincenzo tore his gaze away and stared at me for several seconds.

“What did the doctor say?”

“Gastritis. He told me to watch my diet and stay away from irritating food.”

“I see.”

Vincenzo never pressed further on things that didn’t interest him.

I let out a quiet breath of relief.

Still, I couldn’t shake the feeling that his gaze lingered on me a beat too long.

I must have been imagining things.

When you’re plagued by guilt, everyone seems suspicious.

Stepping out of the hospital gate, a strong wind blew up.

Vincenzo shifted his body slightly, shielding me from the wind naturally, almost instinctively.

For all his cold and aloof exterior, he was a gentleman at his core.

I once ran into him at a cocktail party. He barely spared me a glance the whole time.

If he hadn’t quietly kept my glass filled with tonic water all evening, I’d have thought he hadn’t noticed me at all.

There were plenty of small moments just like this.

Over the past two years, we’d never been close, yet we’d gotten along amicably.

Once we got in the car, Vincenzo handed me a blanket and adjusted my seat into a relaxed position.

“Get some rest. I’ll wake you when we arrive.”

I turned my head and caught his sharp side profile reflected in the car window.

Memories of our first meeting suddenly surfaced.

Back then, I was a nobody—an actress with no fame and no connections. My agent had dragged me to some business dinner, and I’d slipped away halfway through.

I sat alone on a bench eating ice cream when a car pulled up right in front of me.

Vincenzo’s features were half hidden in the night, his demeanor cold and distant.

I’d been confused back then. I was just a small-time actress from a trivial subsidiary under the Santini Group. I’d only slipped out of a dinner — why would the head of the family come looking for me himself?

Instead, he invited me into the car politely and said he wanted to strike a deal.

He needed a wife in name only, for a period of two years.

I wouldn’t need to fulfill any marital obligations during the term. In return, I’d receive top-tier industry resources, plus a large sum of money once the contract ended.

When he presented the formal contract, it felt like a gift from the heavens.

I had no reason to refuse.

Filming back-to-back for a whole month had worn me out completely, and I fell asleep soon after.

When I woke, the first thing I saw was the line of a firm jaw.

My eyes traveled upward, meeting a sharp, forbiddingly cold face.
