The Mafia Don’s Contract Wife Chapter 04

The Mafia Don’s Contract Wife Chapter 04

For the next week, all my work kept me in the city.

Vincenzo had assigned staff to take care of my three daily meals.

No matter where I was filming, meals were delivered right on time every day.

Whether it was due to the carefully prepared meals or not, my morning sickness eased up considerably.

There was a formal dinner party on Friday night. I attended alongside Ryan Everhart, a fellow actor from my agency.

We’d once played a romantic couple with an age-gap dynamic as guest leads in a drama, so we were on pretty good terms.

It was a casual gathering of acquaintances. The atmosphere was relaxed, and we chatted and laughed our way into the banquet hall.

Before long, a stir rippled through the entrance — Vincenzo had arrived.

He wore a tailored black suit paired with a charcoal grey tie, exuding cold elegance and noble poise.

Four or five men surrounded him, talking in low voices, while he merely nodded occasionally, his expression impassive.

Beside me, Ryan suddenly let out a sigh.

“He’s got looks, wealth and power. Being Don Santini, he has everything a man could ever want.”

“I wonder what kind of woman he’s into?”

I smiled faintly and shook my head, “I have no idea.”

Ryan leaned in with a gossipy grin, “Maybe he’s not into women at all.”

“He claims to be married publicly, yet no one has ever laid eyes on his wife.”

“It’s either true love, fiercely protected, or someone he’s hiding.”

“That’s how it always is with high-society families, who can really tell?”

I didn’t respond, pulling a lemon candy out of my clutch.

“Serena, do you fancy men like Don Santini?”

My fingers stilled. Unbidden, an image flashed through my mind: Vincenzo fresh from the shower, the ragged sound of his breathing that night.

I quickly diverted my gaze. “You’re far too nosy. You picked the wrong career line.”

Without warning, Ryan bent down and leaned close to me, his handsome face suddenly inches away.

“Not at all, Serena. Meeting you is the best part of this job.”

Ryan was undeniably good-looking, with upturned peach blossom eyes that looked alluring when he smiled, like a charming fox.

I was about to reply when I felt a heavy, icy gaze land on my back.

I turned around. At the far end of the hall, Vincenzo stood chatting with guests, holding a glass of untouched champagne.

His eyes were not directed my way at all.

It must have just been my imagination.

I turned back and stepped back a couple of paces, picking up our conversation again.

“Meeting me is what makes you regret your career choice.”

“…Serena, you really know how to crush a man’s pride.”

When the party ended, I’d planned to leave with Ryan.

But my agent called, saying a separate car had been arranged to take me home.

After Ryan left, a black Maybach glided silently to a stop in front of me.

Inside the car, Vincenzo sat leaning back with his eyes closed, his tie loosened and his suit slightly rumpled.

He looked worn out.

I climbed in quietly and reached for the fluffy slippers to change out of my heels.

As a female celebrity, high heels were unavoidable at every public event.

Somewhere along the way, Vincenzo had started keeping a pair of soft house slippers in his car, always placed under my seat in advance.

But tonight, the buckle was stubborn, and my manicure got in the way. I fumbled with it several times without success.

I was about to give up when a hand suddenly reached over from my left, unfastening the buckle neatly in a few quick moves.

His warm fingertips brushed lightly over my ankle, and I flinched instinctively.

I looked up, only to find Vincenzo staring straight at me too.

The city night view blurred past the window, neon lights flickering across his eyes in dim streaks, like frames from a silent film.

My heart raced for no reason at all.

“Who is he.”

The question came out of nowhere.

It took me a moment to realize he was talking about Ryan.

He must have heard Ryan call me Serena at the party.

I kept changing my shoes and replied softly,

“He played my younger love interest in a drama.”

Vincenzo paused, then asked again, “Are you close to him?”

“You two talked for a very long time.”

“We’re just casual colleagues. We have to play up our chemistry and fan ship dynamics sometimes for work.”

“Were you putting on an act tonight too?”

I couldn’t figure out why Vincenzo suddenly cared so much about this, and fell silent for two seconds.

“No cameras here tonight, it wasn’t work.”

A brief silence fell between us, before Vincenzo spoke again in a low tone.

“Don’t let him get that close to you again.”

The car passed a row of street lamps one after another, their light streaming inside and illuminating Vincenzo’s face clearly.

His expression remained calm and unreadable as always.

Yet his words felt oddly off.

It was almost as if he was jealous.
