He Proposed… Three Years Too Late Chapter 09

He Proposed… Three Years Too Late Chapter 09

For my daughter’s sake, I had no choice but to venture out alone, to the place he had designated-the wedding home we had once decorated together.

“Don’t you find this place familiar?” Grayson’s eyes lit up with sudden nostalgia the moment he saw me.

I forced my trembling voice steady. “Where’s my daughter? Where is she?”

“Shh!” Grayson lowered his voice, a strange edge to it. “Our daughter is asleep.”

Something in his tone immediately set off alarm bells. I looked at his twisted expression and dared not make a sudden move. His mental state was clearly unstable.

“Can you tell me which room she’s in? I just want to check on her,” I said, forcing calm into my voice, soft

and measured.

The moment he saw I was responding, his face lit up with satisfaction.

“Sure. I’ll take you there.”

He stepped closer and took my hand. This time, I didn’t pull away. I let him lead me upstairs.

Before ascending, I lightly touched my earring to ensure the communicator was on.

Thankfully, our daughter lay in the nursery, deep in slumber, unharmed.

“All of this… it’s all because of that wretched Tanya,” Grayson murmured, his voice laced with bitterness.”

She schemed against us, and we were torn apart all these years. Can we… just live together as a family

from now on?”

“Of course, of course,” I said, soothing his erratic mood while calmly edging toward the bed.

I reached her bedside, checked her briefly, and lifted her gently into my arms.

“Where do you think you’re going with my daughter?” Grayson hissed, dark and threatening.

I forced my calm, masking the fear rising in my chest. “Her face is flushed. Does she have a fever? Should

we take her to the hospital?”

“No! Neither you nor the child can leave this house. It’s too dangerous outside. I’ll find the medicine myself!” He rushed around the room, frantically searching, muttering to himself, “Where’s the fever

medicine? Where is it?”

The moment he turned, I seized my chance. Cradling my daughter, I bolted down the stairs and out the

front door.

Outside, Lucas stood waiting, his expression tense with worry.

“Honey! Check on our daughter!” I called, relief flooding me. “Grayson is still inside!”

The police, who had been lying in wait, immediately stormed in and subdued Grayson.

Doctors accompanying Lucas checked our daughter thoroughly. Luckily, she had only been injected with

a mild sedative-no lasting harm done.

When Grayson was dragged into the police car, it was as if he’d finally come to his senses.

“Alexa… if only all of this could have been real,” he muttered. “If only that New Year’s Eve… if I hadn’t gone

to Tanya and had proposed to you… would our daughter have grown up like this?”

I didn’t spare him a glance. My entire world was my daughter and my husband.

Our daughter stirred awake. At two years old, she was still fuzzy about everything that had happened,

thinking only that she had taken a long nap.

“Mommy, Daddy… where are we?” she asked in her soft, innocent voice.

I kissed her forehead and leaned against Lucas, whispering gently, “Nothing to worry about, sweetheart.

Soon we’ll go to the zoo and have fun, okay?”

Her laughter and excitement finally let my heart settle.

Grayson had been arrested.

Previously, his father had taken all the blame to shield him. But realizing his son was beyond saving, he

revealed the full truth to the authorities.

Grayson faced financial and criminal prosecution on multiple counts and was quickly sentenced. Barring unforeseen circumstances, he would spend the rest of his life behind bars.

I doubt I would ever see him again.

The next time I heard news of Grayson, it was of his death. Friends told me he had made enemies in

prison and was constantly beaten. And that Tanya had taken the last of his family fortune and run.

Broken and defeated, he had committed suicide.

I felt nothing. Not a flicker of emotion-he was just a stranger now, a fleeting shadow in my life.

He had long since become a passerby, while my future-my real life-lay right before my eyes.
