My Boyfriend Hated My Best Friend Until I Came Home Chapter 06

A year later.

The plane landed at the airport in the middle of autumn.

My assistant picked me up and chattered nonstop about the changes over the past year during the ride.

The company had doubled in size, and new projects had launched in three cities.

The Eastside District project, which had been suspended after Finnick pulled his funding, was now completed solely by

me, and its profits had increased eightfold.

“Ms. Carter, while you were away this past year, Finnick came by several times.”

“At first he wanted to discuss a partnership, but after you turned him down, he started asking after you. Then… then he

got drunk once and rambled about all sorts of strange things.”

I closed the file and looked out the window, “Pay him no mind.”

The reunion came completely out of the blue.

I ran straight into Finnick when I was dining with a client at a restaurant.

He was a bit thinner than he had been a year prior, and he looked far less put together.

He froze when he saw me, then snapped back to his senses.

“Seraphina? You’re back?”

I gave a small nod in greeting, then turned to leave.

But he chased after me.

“How have you been this past year? I looked for you but could never get in touch. What happened back then, I…”

I stopped and cut him off, my tone calm and distant.

“Don’t bring up the past. Excuse me, I have somewhere to be.”

He froze on the spot for a long moment.

Yet three days later, I ran into Lilia again, entirely by chance.

The second she saw me, her whole body went rigid.

“S–Seraphina?”

I nodded, polite but distant, “Long time no see.”

Then I stepped around her and headed straight for the elevator.

She suddenly chased atter me and grabbed my arm, her eyes rimmed bright red

Seraphina, can we talk? just for a minute, please..

I glanced down at her hand and she pulled back as if she had been burned.

“Lilia, we have nothing to talk about.

As the elevator doors closed. I saw her crouch on the floor, covering her face as she cried

I used to think that if I ever saw them again, I would be angry, sad, bitter.

But when the moment actually came, I realized that letting go of someone starts when they can no longer hurt you.

I had actually known for a long time that Lilia and Finnick were not having an easy time.

During my year in Averland, plenty of friends kept me updated on their situation, telling me every detail like it was a

joke.

After the wedding fiasco, Finnick’s reputation had tanked completely.

He was such a proud man, and having such a massive scandal go public had been impossible for him to accept at first.

Everyone he had offended in the past took the chance to kick him while he was down, and several of his major projects

were poached one after another.

He started drinking heavily, and his temper grew more volatile by the day.

As for Lilia, without my protection and without the patience Finnick had lavished on her at the height of their

infatuation, her life was even harder.

She had been spoiled rotten her whole life; she couldn’t cook, couldn’t do housework, and couldn’t kick her habit of

frivolous spending.

Finnick’s company was struggling, so their financial situation was a far cry from what it used to be, but she refused to

understand. She threw constant tantrums, demanding luxury bags and overseas trips.

The two started fighting constantly.

Finnick thought she was dramatic, immature, and good for nothing but burning through money.

Lilia thought he had changed, that he was no longer gentle or considerate like before, saying she had been blind to leave

me for him.

They were like two hedgehogs, hurting each other when they were close, but too resentful to stay apart.

I heard they’re talking about getting a divorce lately,” my friend said in a low voice.

“Lilia thinks Finnick doesn’t treat her as well as he used to, and Finnick thinks Lilia is just a burden. They fight every day. their neighbors have even called the police on them.”

I picked up my coffee and blew on it gently. That doesn’t surprise me at all.”

My friend looked at me and asked tentatively, ‘Seraphina… you’re not upset about it anymore, are you?”

I smiled

I stopped being upset a long time ago.”

That was the truth.

During my year in Averland, I had figured out a lot of things.

I used to treat Lilia and Finnick as my entire world, working myself to the bone to earn money and get stronger just for

them.

I thought if I was powerful enough, I could protect everyone I cared about.

But they had shown me in the cruelest way possible that some things can’t be held onto, no matter how strong you are.

Now I know: what truly belongs to you never requires you to fight tooth and nail to keep it. What doesn’t, is never worth forcing.
