30 Days Before Divorce: Mafia Don’s Regret Can’t Win Me Back Chapter 04

30 Days Before Divorce: Mafia Don’s Regret Can’t Win Me Back Chapter 04

Day ten.

Greta returned to the estate. Not to see me, though. She was there for Andrea.

I’d already left that cage of rules behind, but Elena had paid off one of the estate’s bodyguards to keep me informed.

[Madre Bruno is back. Brought a young woman with her.]

I didn’t ask for details.

But that night, Elena couldn’t hold it in.

“The guard said she’s young, pretty, had her arm linked with Greta’s. The two of them walked in chatting and laughing.”

I knew exactly who that woman was. Anna Lauro.

The Principessa of the Lauro family, raised alongside Andrea since childhood. The family eventually sent her abroad.

Even before our wedding, Greta had mentioned her.

“Andrea used to have this friend, Anna Lauro. Such a lovely girl. Shame she went to America.”

Then Anna came back. Last autumn.

At a Camorra family gathering, Greta brought it up deliberately.

“Anna’s back. She’s managing accounts for her family on the East Coast now. Chiara, you’d better step up your game.”

The whole table went silent.

Andrea’s aunt tried to smooth things over. “Alright, alright, Greta. Chiara’s doing great. Look how well she keeps the estate.”

Greta pursed her lips. “What good is keeping a pretty house? She can’t even help Andrea.”

On the drive back to the estate that night, Andrea didn’t say a single word in my defense. Not one.

I stared out the window at the streetlights flashing past, counting them one by one.

I stopped at a hundred and thirty-seven.

Not because we’d arrived. I just didn’t want to count anymore.

And now Greta had brought Anna onto Camorra territory. I wasn’t surprised in the slightest.

What did surprise me was the message Andrea sent the next day.

[My mom showed up at the estate unannounced with someone. I told her to leave.]

I stared at the screen for a moment. Then I set the phone down.

A minute later, another message popped up.

[Where did you move to? Send me the address.]

I still didn’t reply.

His profile picture appeared at the top of the chat window, then disappeared.

A moment later, it appeared again.

Like he was typing. Typing and deleting.

Finally, one message came through.

[Chiara, don’t do this.]

I flipped the phone over, screen down on the table.

Don’t do what?

Don’t cry. Don’t scream. Don’t beg him to stay.

Don’t play the role of his obedient Donna anymore.

Too bad. I was done with this one-woman show a long time ago.

Day fifteen.

I went to the service center and changed my phone number.

Only Elena and my parents had the new one.

It felt like something had ended for good.

Later, Elena told me that on the day my old number went dead, Andrea called twenty-three times.

Every single one connected to nothing.

He showed up at Elena’s marketing firm. Waited at the front desk.

“Elena, where is Chiara?”

Elena didn’t look up. “Who? Don’t know her.”

“Cut the crap. She must have told you. Where did she move? Why did she change her number?”

Elena finally lifted her head. She slowly removed her glasses and wiped them.

“Andrea, when you asked for the divorce, did you ever ask her why?”

The man who ruled Caserta’s underworld, who was used to controlling everything, went completely still.
