The Senator’s Daughter Is Now the CEO They Need Chapter 03

By the time I returned to the Davis house for the third time, I was already in college.

Morning light streamed through the windows as I came downstairs, my backpack heavy with law textbooks.

The black Cadillac was already idling at the curb.

Julian sat in the back seat. Olivia had just opened her door when she turned and saw me, her hand freezing on the handle.

I stopped, too.

According to the unspoken rules of the past few months, that car would take them to their appointments first. I was an afterthought, if I was thought of at all.

Most days, I had to book a ride myself through the family’s corporate account.

Today, Julian didn’t tell the driver to go.

He watched me through the window, a smirk playing on his lips, as if waiting for a show.

“Not getting in?” he asked.

Olivia was already seated. She watched me in the rearview mirror, a faint smile on her face.

I shook my head.

“No. I’ll wait for my own car.”

Of course, I’d ridden in Julian’s car before.

It was right after I’d been brought back.

That night, Olivia suddenly developed an allergic reaction to some “unidentified perfume,” her skin breaking out in red hives.

She didn’t say a word. She just looked at our parents with wide, wounded eyes.

Julian’s glare told me everything: once again, I was the problem.

I understood then.

They found my very presence repulsive.

Even sitting in their car felt like an intrusion.

Julian seemed to have anticipated my answer.

He leaned back against the leather seat and spoke slowly.

“I’m afraid you’ll be waiting a while. The family’s Uber account is down for maintenance. All rides have been canceled.”

I froze for a second.

Canceled?

No one had told me.

One look at Julian and Olivia told me everything I needed to know.

They had known all along.

In this family, I was always the last one to know anything.

But that was fine.

I was used to it.

“No problem,” I said with a smile. “I’ll just take the subway.”

Julian raised an eyebrow, as if he hadn’t expected me to be so calm.

Olivia finally spoke, her voice as sweet as ever.

“Julian, let’s go. I have a spa appointment, and I’ll be late if we wait any longer.”

Julian’s attention shifted away from me.

“Drive.”

The black Cadillac pulled away.

As the window lowered, Julian’s voice drifted back.

“She’s always crying about how wronged she is, right? Perfect. Let her try the subway. If she’s late and some professor sees her looking like that, she’d better not drag the Davis name into it.”

I heard Olivia’s light laugh from inside the car.

The Cadillac soon disappeared down the long driveway.

I stood there, my expression unreadable.

I took out my phone, opened my personal Uber account, entered Columbia University’s address, and selected Uber Black.

A notification appeared a moment later.

Your driver is on the way and will arrive in approximately 2 minutes.

I wasn’t an idiot.

Just because they cut off the family account didn’t mean I couldn’t call a car with my own money.
