The next time I heard news of Dante, my daughter had just been born.

Word had it his family had taken a brutal hit. Competitors were circling like vultures. Assets were dwindling. They could barely afford decent meat on the table anymore.

Dante had never been good at making friends. The moment trouble hit, his so–called allies scattered like rats. No one was willing to lift a finger to help.

His downfall was only a matter of time.

Victor and my parents looked genuinely pleased.

I raised an eyebrow. “I take it you had something to do with this?”

Victor laughed and ruffled my hair. “He messed with you and your parents. This needed to be taken

care of.”

I smiled, lifting my daughter onto my lap and bouncing her gently.

The news was playing on the TV. A reporter was shoving a microphone in Dante’s face–he looked unshaven and exhausted, a shadow of his former self.

“Mr. Moretti, do you have any plans to save your family?”

“Mr. Moretti, Serena’s father said ‘karma always catches up.‘ Do you have anything to say to that?”

“Mr. Moretti, we heard your lover Sofia fled the country the second trouble started. Did you know

about that?”

With each question, Dante’s face darkened further.

I burst out laughing. “Sofia made the smart choice getting out when she could.”

Victor scoffed. “You know, Dante never gave her much cash–just houses and cars. Things he could take back whenever he wanted.”

“He was too rich to care about that stuff back then. Now? Why would she stick around? She wasted years of her life on him, all for nothing.”

I shrugged.

Dante had some expensive habits, and Sofia had picked them up too.

Once you’d gotten used to that kind of lifestyle, it was damn near impossible to go back to a normal

one.

But that wasn’t my problem anymore.

Bad people, bad choices–they really were a match made in heaven.

I have my parents, my husband, my daughter. Everything I need.

Life couldn’t be better.
