I’ll Marry Another Mafia Instead Chapter 09

Victor waved a hand, and his men dragged Dante away.

The guests finally let out a collective sigh of relief, and whispers started to float through the crowd.

“Oh, my God. Did he just get rejected? That was brutal.”

“Serves him right. He walked around like he owned everything.”

“Poor Serena, wasting years of her life on that scumbag.”

The noise faded away gradually.

A memory surfaced, and I turned to Victor. “Victor… have we met before?”

He raised an eyebrow and smiled softly. “That was a long time ago.”

Childhood memories came flooding back. A little boy crying in front of me.

A summer camp. Two kids glued to each other’s sides. Sneaking out to catch fireflies. Counting

stars together.

On the last day, the boy clung tightly to my shirt, refusing to let go no matter how hard his parents

pulled.

His name was too complicated to remember. I called him “Crybaby.”

“Alright, alright. I’ll come find you. All right?”

Crybaby’s eyes lit up. “Really? Promise? Don’t lie. You have to come. Promise me…”

I nodded vaguely. Two days after returning to the city, I’d completely forgotten about it.

“Ms. White, you’ve always been one of a kind.”

Victor’s voice was playful. The Crybaby in my memories, and the man in front of me… yes, I could

see it now.

I laughed awkwardly. “I’m so sorry. My memory’s terrible.”

There was almost a hurt look on his face.

Just then, his mother took my hand. “Serena, you have no idea. He talked about nothing but months. He wanted to run straight to you right away. The thing is he gave you his contact info, but

you

for

you never gave him yours. He was freaking out over it.”

“But I guess,” she smiled, “if two people are meant to be together, they’ll find their way back

eventually.”

A warm current surged in my chest.

When I agreed to this marriage, I’d only been looking for an excuse to escape.

Now, I wasn’t so sure anymore.

Maybe this was life’s way of making it up to me.

After the wedding, we moved to Windmere Bay to get away from Dante’s surveillance.

Victor’s family helped my parents rebuild their business.

Without Dante’s interference, they threw themselves into their work. They looked… happy.

Life in Windmere Bay was completely different.

But Victor showed me around and introduced me to everyone. It wasn’t as hard as I’d thought it

would be.

I blocked Dante on every possible contact. But of course, he found me anyway.

He looked as sharp as ever. But something was missing. His eyes were bloodshot.

“Serena, we need to talk.”

My voice was flat. “There’s nothing to say.”

He took a deep breath. “Serena, I know you hate Sofia. I gave her money and sent her away. I swear – there’ll be no one else.”

“These past few years… I made a lot of mistakes. But you know I love you more than anyone else.”

“You’d rather choose a stranger than the man who’s known you your whole life?”

His eyes were earnest, almost convincing.

I said nothing, just pulled out my phone, found the photo Sofia had sent me last night, and held it up

in front of him.

His face turned ashen.

Dante and Sofia. In bed. Along with the message she’d sent: [He’s flying to see you tomorrow. But tonight? He’s mine. He said we could make this work. One on each coast. What do you think, Serena? Can you accept it?]

Dante shook his head violently. “Serena, no. Let me explain…”

I put my phone away and looked at him. “Dante, don’t come looking for me anymore. You make me

sick.”

He reached out to grab me, but the bodyguards restrained him. “Sir, please step back. Otherwise,

we’ll call the police.”

I got in the car and told the driver to go.

The weather was perfect. Victor had taken the day off to take me to the lake.

Behind me, Dante’s figure grew smaller and smaller until it was no longer visible.
