My Husband’s Golden Retriever, My Second Life Chapter 07

My Husband’s Golden Retriever, My Second Life Chapter 07

Ethan vanished for three whole days.

He never answered calls, never replied to messages, and nowhere in the house held any trace of him.

Zoe grew increasingly anxious, “Ms. Hayes, do you think he’s gone to the police?”

“There’s no case to file. No officer would open a report over a missing dog.”

“Then… do you think he’s hunting for Wynn?”

“He has no clue where she is.”

But I was wrong.

Ethan was far sharper than I’d given him credit for.

He’d hired a private investigator to dig through my car’s GPS history, phone records, and bank statements.

On the fourth day, he showed up at the gates of Mason’s breeding facility.

Mason’s phone call jolted me awake.

“M’aim, a man’s here. Says he’s your husband and wants to take the golden retriever away.”

“Did he bring anyone with him?”

“He’s alone.”

“Let him take her.”

Mason fell silent for two seconds, hesitant, “Are you sure?”

“Absolutely.”

I hung up, changed my clothes, and drove straight to the facility.

When I arrived, Ethan was crouched in front of the cage.

Wynn lay inside, her belly swollen far larger than it had been after her first litter.

The second pregnancy had already taken hold.

The moment she saw Ethan, a wild light flared in her eyes.

It was the desperate, blazing hope of a woman staring at her only lifeline.

She scrambled toward the cage door, her claws scraping harshly against the ground.

“Ethan… Ethan…”

She tried to speak again.

Yet no coherent words came out. Only hoarse, ragged gasps, followed by a violent coughing fit.

Ethan’s face drained completely of color.

He stood up, his voice trembling. “Nora… what in God’s name have you done to her?”

“Breeding,” I leaned against the doorframe, unruffled, “I’ve already told you.”

“You know exactly who’s inside this dog, don’t you!”

“Who?”

He parted his lips but could not utter a single word.

He dared not.

To speak it aloud was to admit his part in the murder.

“Ethan,” I stepped forward to stand directly before him, “If you want to take her away, you can. Take her right now.”

He froze in shock.

Inside the cage, Wynn trembled with pure excitement, scrambling harder toward the bars.

“But,” I continued coldly, “the second you walk out of here with her, I hand every piece of evidence to the police.”

“What evidence?”

I pulled out my phone and pressed play on an audio recording.

Ethan’s voice rang crystal clear through the speaker, “She’s dead. Her house, her savings, her studio — it’s all ours now.”

Another track played next, Chloe’s triumphant tone cutting through the silence, “Her possessions mean nothing. I’ve drained seven years of her lifespan.”

Ethan’s face turned from white to ashen gray.

“When… when did you record this?”

“In my past life,” I said plainly, “Do you believe me?”

He could not understand the rebirth, but he knew one truth for certain — I held his fate in my hands.

“Ethan, you have two choices. Walk away, pretend none of this ever happened, and keep playing the loving husband until you find another chance to kill me. Or take her with you right now, and I’ll send you to prison for the rest of your life.”

He stood rooted to the spot, his whole body shaking uncontrollably.

Wynn clawed frantically at the cage bars, her paws scraping raw and bloody.

She still waited for Ethan to save her.

She never understood that Ethan would never sacrifice himself for anyone.

He turned and walked away.

He did not glance at Wynn once.

He did not say a single word.

He just left.

A shrill, agonized scream tore out from the breeding shed, sharp enough to slice through the night air.

“Ethan! Ethan! Come back!”

Mason jumped, his cigarette falling to the ground.

“What the hell’s wrong with this bitch?”

“She’s just vocal,” I said flatly, “Born with a loud voice.”

Mason shot me a wary look and did not dare ask another question.
