My Husband’s Golden Retriever, My Second Life Chapter 06

My Husband’s Golden Retriever, My Second Life Chapter 06

Ethan finally caught on by the fourth day.

“Nora, where did you send Wynn?”

He stood in the center of the living room, phone in hand, Wynn’s photo displayed bright on the screen.

“I already told you. The pet salon.”

“Which one? I went to check. The shop you mentioned never took her in.”

I set down my glass slowly.

“Have you been checking up on me?”

“I’m tracking down my dog.”

His eyes locked onto mine, cold and unyielding.

I’d known this man for three years. He’d showered me with flowers, designer bags, and cars. He’d been gentle, attentive, and obedient in every way.

But he’d never wanted me.

He’d only ever craved my house, my savings, my studio, and everything Chloe would gain after my death.

I never knew the full details of their deal.

But I knew one thing for certain. He was not innocent.

“Ethan,” I said softly, “What would you think if I told you Wynn is no ordinary dog?”

His face froze for a split second.

“What are you talking about?”

“I mean I sent her off to breed.”

“What?”

“She’s in heat. I found her a mate. You said you wanted her happy, didn’t you? Breeding’s the happiest thing for a female dog.”

Ethan’s expression darkened completely.

He knew. He’d always known Chloe’s soul inhabited Wynn’s body.

To trap a human soul inside a dog’s body and force it through endless breeding was a torment worse than death for Chloe.

“You’ve lost your mind!” he roared sharply, “Where is she? I’m going to get her right now!”

“Why rush to get her back?” I tilted my head and stared at him, “Aren’t you always busy? Constant meetings, endless errands looking after Chloe. When would you even have time for a dog?”

His pupils contracted violently.

He’d caught the hidden meaning in my words.

He knew I’d seen through everything.

“Nora Hayes.”

“Yes?”

“Don’t push me.”

“Push you?” I let out a cold laugh, “What exactly have I pushed you to do?”

He held my gaze for a long, heavy moment.

The air turned thick and rigid, hard as solid stone.

At last, he took a deep breath, spun around, and stormed out.

The front door slammed shut with a deafening crash.

I sank back onto the sofa, one hand resting gently on my belly.

My baby kicked softly inside me.

“Don’t be scared,” I whispered, my voice gentle. “Mommy’s right here.”
