They Poisoned My Voice So She Could Steal My Future, Not Knowing I Already Chose a Different One Chapter 06

He waved. “Get them out of here.”

The agents dragged Buck and Maude away.

The antidote was starting to work. The burning in my throat was finally fading.

Commander Thorne turned to me. “Emily, you need to go to the hospital. As for your family…” He paused.

I typed on his phone screen: [Commander Thorne, I don’t have a family. From the moment they injected me, they were just criminals who attempted to murder me.]

He looked at me, and a flicker of respect crossed his face. “Understood. The chopper is waiting.”

The helicopter landed on the roof of Walter Reed Federal Medical Center.

As they wheeled me in, I typed a frantic message for the Commander. [If my voice is ruined, can I still report for duty? Will they kick me out of the Academy?]

He smiled. “The Marshal Service specifically requested you. You’re a hero. Your voice will be fine.”

The surgeon was a gray-haired old man. Thorne quickly introduced him. “This is Dr. Finch. He’s the top vocal cord specialist in the entire federal system.”

Dr. Finch also spoke up. “Don’t worry. I’ve seen cases much worse than yours make a full recovery.”

Three days later, I was in a private recovery room at the hospital, holding a glass of water.

Dr. Finch had done good work. My voice was still a little hoarse, but it was back.

The door opened. Commander Thorne walked in with a red-bordered folder stamped ECHO POINT. With him was a woman in a dark blue uniform.

“Emily, feeling better?”

“Yes, sir. Ready to return to duty.” I put down the water and started to get up.

“Take it easy. This is Captain Walsh. She’s head of security for the Academy. She’s handling your case.”

Captain Walsh nodded and sat down. “You’ve been through a lot. Here’s the update.”

“Sophia screamed and threw a fit when she was arrested. Claimed she was you. We showed her the DNA and iris scan results. She started crying then.”

Captain Walsh opened her tablet and showed me a video.

Sophia was wearing my sundress, her hair a mess, handcuffed to a chair in an interrogation room, sobbing.

“I didn’t know! My parents told me to do it!”

“They said my sister wasn’t going, so I should just take her spot!”

“I didn’t know it was a federal academy! I thought it was just a normal university!”

I stared at the screen, a cold smile on my face.

Captain Walsh raised an eyebrow. “Oh, we also recovered her last Instagram post, sent about five minutes before she was arrested.”

She handed me the tablet. It was a selfie of Sophia in front of the main gate, with a restricted radar array clearly visible in the background.

I looked at that social media post and almost wanted to applaud her stupidity.

With that one photo, she just guaranteed she’d never see the outside of a federal facility for the rest of her life.
