They Poisoned My Voice So She Could Steal My Future, Not Knowing I Already Chose a Different One Chapter 05

Sophia screamed, dropping her phone.

Through the phone, the sound of heavy tactical boots echoed. “Freeze! Hands on your head! Get on the ground!”

“What are you doing? I’m a freshman! I’m Emily Carson!”

“Identity verification failed. Suspected infiltration of a restricted area. You are under arrest!”

On the other end of the call, my father panicked. “Sophia! Sophia, what’s happening?”

“Officer, this is a mistake!”

“What classified information? We didn’t know anything about that! She got accepted to the school, so she came to register. That’s all!”

Buck was stunned, holding the phone. “What the hell is going on? Why are there so many feds?”

Leaning against the cellar wall, I finally smiled.

Buck whipped his head toward me, and for the first time, I saw real fear in his eyes. “Who… what are you?”

I said nothing.

Then, we heard it. The thundering roar of helicopter rotors. A powerful wind kicked up dust and debris. Several dark figures descended on ropes.

The cellar door, along with half the dirt wall, was blown open by a breaching charge. Before the smoke cleared, four blinding tactical lights cut through the darkness.

Men in tactical gear stormed in. Buck didn’t even have time to scream before he was slammed to the ground by a rifle butt. Click—a cold pair of handcuffs locked around his wrists. “Don’t move!”

Outside, Maude tried to put up a fight but froze when two black rifle muzzles were pointed at her head.

A man in a field jacket stepped into the cellar, walking right over the groaning Buck. He walked straight to me, stood at attention, and saluted.

“Emily Carson, I’m Commander James Thorne, Federal Security Bureau. I’m sorry we’re late.”

I dropped the bloody piece of ceramic, used the wall to pull myself up, and tried to return the salute. I pointed to my throat.

Commander Thorne’s eyes narrowed. “Get a medic in here! Now!”

A medic quickly came down, bandaged my arm, and injected an antidote for the paralytic agent.

Buck’s phone was still on the ground, the call still connected.

Through the speaker, I could hear my parents screaming. “Let my daughter go! All we did was let her take her sister’s spot at school. What gives you the right to arrest her?”

“Emily gave up her spot voluntarily! This is a family matter!”

Commander Thorne picked up the phone and looked at the chaos on the screen. “A family matter?”

His voice was ice cold. “Your daughter impersonated a federal officer and attempted to enter a restricted military facility. That’s espionage.”

My father’s voice fell silent for a second, then exploded. “How is that possible? It’s just a regular acceptance letter! How could this be espionage? You’re making this up!”

Commander Thorne just grunted. “Tell it to a judge.” He hung up.

Buck was shaking uncontrollably on the ground. He finally understood the trouble he was in. “Sir… please! I didn’t know! Her own daddy sold her to me!”

Commander Thorne looked down at him with disgust. “Kidnapping, false imprisonment, assault. You’ll be spending the rest of your life in a federal supermax.”
