Over the next few days, messages kept pouring into my phone.

Every one of them was asking for help.

Not only that, my former coworkers came to Procurement one after another to find me.

“Olivia, you used to help us all the time. Can you help us one more time?”

“Olivia, please. The kitchen manager is about to tear me apart. Please save me this once.”

I looked at those familiar young faces and let out a quiet sigh.

“I’m sorry. I work in Procurement now. I really can’t help you.”

“Amy, I did help you many times before. I even took the blame for a banquet complaint for you. But when I was moved out, you didn’t even hold one box steady for me.”

“Ava, I trained you by hand for half a year. Prep, plating, heat control. I taught you everything I could. But you didn’t say one word for me.”

“Claire, I covered your Christmas Eve banquet shift three times. You never even thanked me.”

“Now that you need me, you come looking for me.”

“Do I look like I have nothing better to do?”

The young cooks flushed under my words. For a long time, no one could answer.

In the end, Mia squeezed into the crowd and broke the awkward silence.

“Olivia, the new logbooks and kitchen gloves arrived. Where should I put them?”

I used the excuse to pull myself away and went with Mia to deliver the items to the storeroom.

The others were left staring at one another.

“Do you think we did something wrong? We kept trying to please the kitchen manager, but Olivia really was good to us.”

“But Olivia has no connections. She offended the kitchen manager and Mr. Walker. Even if she is a senior chef, didn’t she still get kicked to Procurement to rot there?”

“We just chose a side. We did nothing wrong.”

“Forget it. We can come back in a few days. Olivia is soft-hearted. She’ll definitely help us.”

The cooks left together, defeated and sullen.

Mia rolled her eyes.

“Olivia, don’t help them. Those people are ungrateful.”

“Once they learn everything from you, they’ll forget your kindness again.”

This time, I agreed with Mia.

She was right.

Some people cannot be warmed by kindness.

I thought I would have to put up with several more days of interruptions.

But the next day, Mia brought me explosive news.

“Olivia, this is bad. Something huge happened in your old banquet kitchen.”

“At a corporate anniversary dinner last night, the kitchen sent a nut-based sauce to a guest with a severe allergy. They also messed up the gluten-free menu.”

“One VIP went into anaphylactic shock on the spot. The ambulance came.”

“Now the guest’s family and the company representatives are in the hotel lobby demanding that the hotel be shut down until it fixes its safety procedures.”
