Farewell, My Don Chapter 03

Farewell, My Don Chapter 03

I went home alone.

The villa was large, empty, and freezing cold. I changed my shoes, went upstairs, and began packing my luggage.

In truth, I had been quietly packing for some time; now I was just doing the final finishing touches.

I took the clothes from the closet that were similar to Amara’s style, folded them one by one, and put them in a suitcase.

I would never wear them again.

The sound of the door opening came from downstairs.

Dominic was back, but he wasn’t alone.

Amara stood at the top of the stairs, giving me a sweet smile: “Genevieve, long time no see.”

I said nothing, only giving her a faint glance.

“Amara said she wanted to see Betty,” Dominic said awkwardly. “She said it’s been a long time.”

Betty was a dog Dominic and Amara raised when they were together. Later, when Amara went abroad, the dog stayed with Dominic.

Since I married into the family, I had been the one taking care of her.

“Whatever.” I turned to go back to my room.

“Betty! Betty!” Amara had already crouched down, clapping her hands to call the dog.

A white Samoyed ran out from a corner. Seeing Amara, she pounced on her excitedly, her tail wagging like a propeller.

“Oh, Betty still remembers me!” Amara hugged the dog, her eyes curving with a smile. “It seems even after being raised by another woman for so many years, you still only recognize me as your mommy.”

These words were obviously a deliberate provocation.

I paused for a moment, my hand resting on the bedroom door.

Dominic frowned: “Amara, you left for abroad without a word and didn’t want her then. You lost the right to be her mother long ago.”

“Now that you’ve seen her, you can go back.”

Amara pouted: “It’s dark and raining outside; it’s not safe for me to go back alone. Can I… stay the night?”

Dominic instinctively looked at me, a trace of questioning in his eyes.

But this time, before he could speak, I spoke first.

“The guest room is the last one on the first floor. The sheets and covers are all clean.” My tone was calm. “Stay if you want.”

I turned and walked into the bedroom, not bothering to look at their shocked expressions.

I continued packing until a knock at the door made me stop.

I opened the door to find Amara leaning against the frame, looking me up and down as if I were an insect.

“Pretending to be generous?” she sneered. “You think letting me stay will make Dominic think you’ve matured? Impossible. He will never choose you over me.”

“Genevieve, let me show you how much of a failure you are. All these years, you haven’t just failed to win Dominic’s heart; you haven’t even won the heart of a dog.”

She whistled, and Betty ran over.

“Betty,” Amara pointed at me, her tone malicious, “go, bite her.”

Betty hesitated for a moment, then, under Amara’s egging on, suddenly lunged at my calf, sinking her teeth into the flesh.

I gasped, a sharp pain radiating up my leg, my face instantly turning pale.

Amara laughed with immense satisfaction: “See? You can’t even win over a dog you raised. Do you really think you can steal Dominic from me? You should just give up!”

Pain and humiliation flooded me like a tide, but I bit my lip, refusing to make another sound.

I looked at Amara, my gaze as cold as steel.

“I forgot to tell you, Amara,” I said steadily, “every public area of this mansion—the stairs, corridors, living room—is equipped with 24-hour surveillance. Both audio and video are very clear.”

“If you still want to stay here today and rekindle the old flame with Dominic, I advise you to stop provoking me. Otherwise, I’ll show the footage directly to him. Do you think he’ll still let you stay?”

Amara’s face turned pale.

I didn’t look at her again, turning back into my room and closing the door.

I took the first-aid kit from the drawer to disinfect and dress the wound myself.

After finishing, I lay down on the bed and closed my eyes.

Unlike usual, I didn’t prepare milk for Dominic, nor did I wait for him to finish work to say goodnight.

I went straight to sleep.

In the middle of the night, I was startled awake by a choking smell.

I opened my eyes and found the room filled with thick grey smoke. My throat felt like it was on fire, and my lungs ached severely.

I stumbled out of bed and opened the door, only to see flames raging in the corridor.

There was a fire!

I covered my nose and mouth, staggering along the wall toward the stairs.

But I had inhaled too much smoke. My legs gave way, and I collapsed, the scorching wood burning through my nightgown.

I thought I was going to die.

Then, a figure broke through the flames—

Dominic.

He was in his pajamas, his face covered in soot, looking around in a panic as if searching for something in the hallway.

I couldn’t speak, so I could only reach out my hand, trying to get his attention.

He ran toward me—

Or so I thought.

He brushed past me, rushing to the corner where Betty was curled up, and scooped her up in his arms.

He didn’t even look at me.

My heart shattered into a million pieces.
