The door opened. 

Carmela. Vanessa was supporting her arm. 

“Lorenzo, what happened? I heard Sonia collapsed-” 

Vanessa looked me over. I saw a flash of satisfaction in her eyes, quickly masked. 

“Oh, Sonia. Thank heaven you’re okay. Enzo was found -it was all a misunderstanding. Please don’t be mad at Lorenzo. I’m sure you didn’t mean it—” 

Lorenzo stood up. 

The look he gave Vanessa was cold. 

Carmela chimed in, “Lorenzo, Sonia has a temper. But she can’t have children of her own. Of course she’d be jealous. Give her a talking–to, and let’s move on-” 

“Mama, she had a miscarriage.” 

The room suddenly turned frigid. 

Carmela’s mouth hung open. 

Vanessa turned pale and took a step back. 

Lorenzo turned to Vanessa. “You said she attacked you 

like a beast. You said she took Enzo.” 

Vanessa stammered, “I… I was worried. He was gone 

” 

“Because of you-” his voice choked. “Because of the things you told me I killed my own child.” 

Vanessa started crying, grabbing his sleeve. “Lorenzo, I didn’t know she was pregnant. You still have Enzo. 

Enzo is your own flesh and blood-” 

He shoved her away. The expression on his face–pure 

revulsion. 

“Get out.” 

“But…” 

Carmela tried to intervene. 

“Lorenzo! Vanessa was just worried about her son! And 

you can always have another child later. Why are you 

blaming her-” 

I heard them arguing. 

My stomach turned again. 

“Get out.” 

They stopped. 

I said, “Get the hell out.” 

Lorenzo stepped forward to block the bed. “Mother, take her and don’t come back.” 

Carmela tried to argue, but Lorenzo’s expression 

silenced her. 

Vanessa bit her lip, then let Carmela pull her out of the 

room.
