The Man Who Ruined My 22nd, the Customer Who Wanted a Steamed Bun Chapter 09

It was many, many years later before I finally understood.

That look in Vivienne’s eyes had been jealousy.

It had been resentment that whispered, Why do you get to have everything I don’t?

It had been hatred, the kind that said, I hate the way you toss me scraps and call it kindness.

So after all those years of planning, she took my parents, took my boyfriend, and took all the love, happiness, and wealth I once had.

All of it was revenge for the care I had given her.

She only wanted to prove that she deserved everything I had once owned.

That she was no less than me.

She clung desperately to everything she had now.

On the outside, she looked rich and fulfilled.

But inside, she was like a massive black hole, impossible to fill no matter how much she swallowed.

So when I looked at her now, I did not know what to say.

And I truly did not want to say anything anymore.

So I stayed silent.

But in her eyes, even my silence became another form of mockery.

It seemed that no matter what I did, she had no intention of letting me go.

“Elena, people like you always look down on everyone else. Who gave you the right to look down on me? Who decided I only deserved to stand in your shadow and follow you like a dog?”

“You’re a… damn narcissist. Knowing you was the worst luck of my life.”

Elliot could not take it anymore and shouted, “Vivienne, enough!”

At that moment, Maisie came running downstairs with her homework notebook in her arms.

When she saw several adults arguing downstairs, she stopped timidly.

“Mommy, I… I don’t know how to do this problem.”

Vivienne stared at Maisie.

The corner of her mouth lifted, as if she had found a new target.

“Elena, someone actually wanted you? Someone actually had a child with you?”

“A stray breeding another little stray.”

“Try not to raise her into something as disgusting as you.”

In an instant, the shop fell into a deathly silence.

The sound of teeth grinding came through the air.

My fingers curled into fists, my knuckles turning white from the force.

In that moment, I truly wanted to kill her.

“Vivienne, back then, I really should have walked past that alley. Those boys should have destroyed you right there.”

Maisie had never seen me like that before.

She trembled uncontrollably, silent tears rolling down her cheeks in big drops.

Step by step, I walked toward Vivienne.

I grabbed the heavy cleaver from the cutting board and held it in my hand.

“You can say whatever you want about me. I don’t care. But if you say one more word about my daughter, I will end you.”

I raised the blade.

Water still clung to the metal, glittering under the lights.

Everyone’s heart seemed to stop.

Then a steady voice sounded, shattering the murderous tension in the room like ice.

“Elena, calm down. I’m here.”
