His Smokescreen Is Now the Woman He Can’t Have Chapter 39

After a long moment, he lowered his eyes, unable to meet my gaze.

When he spoke again, the man who had always stood so far above everyone at West Point sounded, for the first time, broken.

“Elara… I’m sorry.”

He said the words slowly, as if each syllable was a monumental effort.

I froze, my body stiffening.

I had imagined this reunion a hundred times. I had pictured his questions, his anger, his disbelief. But I had never imagined this—that he would stand in front of so many people and say those words to me.

And in a voice so low it was almost a confession.

Caleb kept his eyes on the ground, as if forcing himself to say everything that had to be said.

“I know everything now. The Honor Committee… they gave me the full investigation records.”

“Isabelle was lying to me. All along. She said that from the day you arrived, you were jealous of her, that you targeted her, that you ostracized her. She said she was the victim.”

“So I was biased against you. That’s why I… I believed her. Again and again.”

His voice grew quieter, but he didn’t stop.

“I shouldn’t have misunderstood you. And I especially shouldn’t have asked you to take the fall for her. You have every right to be angry with me.”

Over the past month, Caleb had been forced to dismantle the entire framework of his life.
