When the Luna Falls Asleep Chapter 02

When the Luna Falls Asleep Chapter 02

Every word Jonathan had spoken felt like a blade piercing my heart, making it impossible to breathe.

After he and Chloe left, I buried my face in the blankets and cried silently.

To me, those eight months had felt like nothing more than a nap.

So why had my entire life been destroyed when I woke up?

It had all started after a particularly tough shift.

My wolf had begun falling asleep uncontrollably, and before long, I had started slipping into sudden periods of unconsciousness as well.

I had worked hard for four years. During my senior year of college, I earned an interview with Wainwright & Co., one of the most prestigious fashion companies in the industry.

I missed it because I overslept.

When I learned that I had narcolepsy—that it was incurable and would only worsen over time—the first thing I did was ask Jonathan to break our mate bond.

He refused.

He held me tightly and wouldn’t let go, promising that he would stay by my side and help me through treatment.

His Alpha parents had once adored me.

But after learning about my illness and how weak my wolf had become, they demanded that Jonathan reject me.

He refused them too.

He was willing to sever ties with both his parents and the pack just to seal our mate bond.

That was why I had always felt guilty about missing our engagement ceremony. And even more guilty about missing my Luna Coronation.

I understood why Jonathan had been hurting.

But why hadn’t he told me the truth sooner?

I had been asleep for eight months.

His child with Chloe was already three months old.

That meant they had been together long before my most recent sleep.

Why hide it from me?

Why let me continue living like a fool—drowning in love, gratitude, and guilt?

Was this what they called protecting me?

After crying until I had no tears left, I pushed open the bedroom door.

This had once been the home Jonathan and I shared.

Now it felt unfamiliar.

When Jonathan had decorated the packhouse years ago, everything had been in shades of pink because that was my favorite color.

Now it had all been replaced with baby blue.

Chloe’s favorite color.

The wall that had once displayed our wedding portrait now held a wedding photo of Jonathan and Chloe.

They smiled shyly at the camera, looking exactly like newlyweds deeply in love.

A sharp pain twisted through my chest.

Even my wolf, who spent most of her life asleep these days, let out a mournful whimper.

Jonathan and Chloe might have betrayed me.

But I still had my parents.

More than anything, I wanted to see them.

When they learned about my illness, they seemed to age overnight.

Yet whenever they stood in front of me, they always smiled as though nothing had happened.

But their swollen eyes and the muffled sobs I heard late at night had never fooled me.

As I approached their house, laughter drifted through the door.

The sound eased some of the fear in my heart.

I had been asleep for eight months.

I had assumed they would be devastated.

Instead, it sounded as though they were doing alright.

Surely they’d be happy to see me awake.

But the moment I opened the door, my smile froze.

Jonathan was there. So was Chloe.

My mother was holding Austin in her arms, making him giggle with a toy.

The scene looked warm.

Happy. Like one big family.

At the sound of the door opening, my parents looked up with smiles.

Then they saw me.

The warmth vanished instantly.

The pacifier slipped from my mother’s hand and fell to the floor.

“Allison?”

She stood up abruptly.

“You’re awake? Why didn’t you tell us you were coming?”

She hurried over, her eyes already reddening.

“You’ve gotten so thin, sweetheart…”

Yet I remained frozen in place.

Why did my heart hurt so much?

Even after they pulled me to the dining table and sat me down, I still couldn’t process what I had seen.

My mother placed a piece of fish into my plate.

I didn’t touch it.

An uncomfortable silence settled over the room.

Jonathan frowned, “Allison, what are you upset about now?”

My mother looked helpless. Chloe pressed her lips together before standing.

“Allison, is it because I’m here?” she asked softly. “Then I’ll leave. I don’t want to interrupt your family reunion.”

My mother immediately grabbed her arm, “You’re not going anywhere.”

The words came out without hesitation.

“You’re my daughter. You’re part of this family now. Why should you leave?”

Then she stopped. As though realizing what she had just said.

Her eyes darted nervously toward me.

“Allison…” She swallowed hard, “Chloe is a good girl. She grew up without parents. Your father and I talked about it and decided to adopt her.”

“From now on, she’ll be your sister.”

“Haven’t you always wanted a younger sister?”

My fingers tightened around my fork.

My mother continued carefully, “And… regarding what happened between her and Jonathan… You shouldn’t blame them too much.”

“Considering your condition…”

“Enough!”
