At the same time, Caleb and several other cadets from privileged families were helping their company officer sort graduation files. The only sound in the room was the rustle of paper, until one cadet suddenly cursed and shot up from his chair.

“Check the internal system! The final rankings just posted… this year’s top cadet is in our company!”

Everyone stopped what they were doing.

“First place?” one cadet whistled, and all eyes turned to Caleb. “Who else could it be but you, Caleb?”

“Congratulations, Sterling,” someone had already started to say.

But Caleb frowned slightly.

He knew his own grades. They were high, but not the highest. He had received an A- in one military history course, which was enough to knock him from the top spot.

But if it wasn’t him, who could it be? He quickly ran through the names of the highest-scoring cadets in the company and still came up empty.

Before he could speak, the cadet who had first shouted cursed again, this time louder, his voice filled with shock.
