They dragged Izzy toward the stairs.

One guard had her under the arms.

Another had her by the legs.

A third pulled out a handkerchief-

and started wiping down a dagger.

Izzy saw it and thrashed in terror, her screams raw and gut-wrenching.

“No-no, please! Let me go! Julian! Julian, I’m begging you! Don’t touch my baby! Please! Please-”

Julian turned his face away.

He couldn’t even look at her.

Valerie leaned against the wall with her arms crossed, smirking like this was entertainment.

I tried to throw myself forward, but a bodyguard pinned me on the floor and held me tight.

“Kieran!” I choked out, twisting against the guard’s weight. “Make them stop! She’ll die!”

Kieran didn’t move. His face was a mask-cold, deliberate, unreadable.

“She asked for it. You step out of line, you pay the price.”

A shriek tore through the upstairs.

Then the thud of something heavy hitting the floor.

My heart sank with it.

Not long after, they dragged Izzy downstairs. She was completely limp.

Her dress was soaked in blood, staining the floor crimson.

She stared at the ceiling with empty eyes, not even able to cry.

“The baby… my baby…”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“Izzy!”

I ripped free and crawled to her, pulling her into my arms.

She was cold.

Too cold.

Valerie looked down at us like she was looking at trash by the curb.

“See? If you’d just done what we said, none of this would have happened. You had to make it difficult.”

I totally lost it. I lunged to my feet and charged at her.

“You b*tch! I’ll kill you!”

But the bodyguards were faster.

They caught me midair and slammed me back.

Valerie sneered, her voice dripping with contempt.

“Still haven’t learned your place? Don’t blame me then. Come on-strip them naked and dump them in the red-light district to work the streets.”

For a second, I couldn’t even process the words.

The guards started toward us with grins on their faces.

I dragged Izzy behind me and spread my arms over her, my fists landing weakly against them.

Just as my strength ran out and my vision started to blur-

BANG!

The door flew off its hinges, slammed open by a battering ram.

Dozens of armed men poured in, guns raised, barrels trained on every thug in the room.

Then came the rapid sound of footsteps.

Governor Alistair Windsor and his wife Eleanor Windsor walked in-and their eyes landed on

Izzy, drenched in blood.

Eleanor flew across the room and gathered Izzy into her arms.

“My baby-my baby, look at me-what did they do to you? Oh God-oh God-”

Alistair knelt down beside her. His hand trembled as he brushed blood-matted hair from her face. The fury in his eyes almost burned through.
