He didn’t even dare look up.

I laughed—but there was nothing funny about it.

Julian panicked first.

He crawled straight to Izzy, grabbed the hem of her skirt, and started sobbing like a coward.

“Izzy! Babe-I was wrong! Please, for the two years we had, forgive me just this once!”

She stopped in front of Izzy and looked her up and down with pure contempt.

“The governor’s daughter?” she said. “You?”

She ripped the ring off Izzy’s finger, flung it to the ground, and crushed it under her heel.

“That cheap prop might work on them, but don’t insult me by pretending that’s the Governor’s real seal. I’ve never seen your faces at any event I attended. Stop lying.”

Of course she hadn’t seen us.

Valerie clapped her hands once.

I was betting that he wouldn’t be so quick to throw away a woman who knew him too well-the real him.

Kieran stared at me for a few seconds.

“Valerie,” he said quietly. “Let it go.”
