The Day He Proposed, the Day He Picked Her Up, the Day I Threw Away the Baby Chapter 07

As the anesthesia wore off, I came to slowly.

I opened my eyes groggily, only to see Garrett sitting beside my bed.

For a second, I thought I was still dreaming.

I stared at him for a while to make sure.

Then I jolted fully awake. “Why are you here?”

His eyes were red-rimmed, his hair a mess.

He was gripping my hand tightly, like he was afraid I’d slip away.

I tried to piece things together.

Wasn’t Tristan the one who came with me?

I pushed myself against the bed, trying to sit up, but my body felt weak and heavy.

Garrett immediately reached over to help me.

The moment his fingers touched my arm, I pulled away without thinking.

He went still. A few tears suddenly fell from his eyes.

He looked up at me, his voice hoarse. “Why didn’t you tell me? You were pregnant.”

I was confused too. Who told him?

Without warning, he bent down and wrapped me tightly in his arms, burying his face against my shoulder.

His voice came out muffled. “Cassidy, once you’re out of the hospital, let’s go get our marriage license.”

I looked around the room. “Where’s Tristan?”

Garrett slowly straightened up.

He stared at me in disbelief, his voice cracking. “You told him but not me? If he hadn’t messaged me, I never would’ve known!”

I let out a quiet sigh.

So it really was Tristan who told him.

I could’ve left with at least a little dignity.

“Cassidy?” Garrett’s voice pulled me back from my thoughts.

I gave him a faint smile. “We’re not getting married anymore.”

“Why?” His emotions erupted.

He grabbed my hand, panic flashing in his eyes. “Is it because of Tristan?”

I honestly couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

He was still trying to blame me?

I glared at him, my voice turning ice cold.

“Have you no shame? What gives you the right to question me?”

He choked on his own words. His lips parted slightly, his eyes full of confusion.

As my mind cleared, old memories came rushing back.

A few more tears slipped down my face. I wiped them away.

Why should I cry for him? He didn’t deserve it.

Still gripping my hand, he asked, his voice tight.

“Why were you hiding from me? Why’d you move everything out?”

“You’re the one who cheated,” I cut him off. “And you’re asking me why?”

His eyes flew wide open. “You think I cheated on you?”

I laughed, but it was pure fury. Then the laugh died, and I just felt pathetic.

“You’re still trying to lie to me…”

I opened the chat history with Tessa and held my phone up in front of him.

“The day we were supposed to get our marriage license, you went to pick her up from the airport.”

“You even bought her white roses. Pretty thoughtful. You even took off your ring.”

He went still. His face was a mess of shock, panic, guilt, and disbelief, all tangled together.

His lips moved, but not a single word came out.

I looked down. Tears dripped quietly onto the blanket.

“Everything before this… fine. I’ll chalk it up to my own stupidity.”

I paused briefly. “But from now on, let’s just pretend we’re strangers.”

His face went pale. “No. I’m not ending this.”

“We’re already married in every way that matters. We’re only missing a piece of paper.”

“You can’t just decide it’s over. I won’t accept it!”

I sighed softly and lay back down.

“Suit yourself.”

“I’m tired. I want to rest.”
