She had truly let go.

Wyatt went rigid.

The color drained from his face.

He looked like he wanted to grab her, to say something more, but the words were lodged in his throat.

Lena’s gaze drifted past him to the Red Creek River flowing slowly behind.

“I used to think,” she said softly, “that my love for you was like this river. That it would always be here.”

She paused.

When she spoke again, her voice was steady.

“But for me, Wyatt, that river has run dry.”

With that, she turned and walked away.

Her steps were firm, without a hint of hesitation.

“Lena, wait!”

Wyatt finally snapped out of his stupor, his voice hoarse as he started after her.

But in the next second, a scream tore through the air.

“Fire! The grain warehouse is on fire!”

The scene exploded into chaos.

People shouted and scattered.

Lena whipped around.

Not far away, flames were already licking the sky from the newly built grain warehouse.

Thick black smoke billowed upward.

“Careful!”

A voice shouted in her ear.

Before Lena could react, Logan lunged, shielding her with his body as they rolled to the ground, narrowly avoiding a shower of hot debris.
