The Comments Begged Me to Believe He Loved Me, His Actions Had Already Convinced Me Otherwise Chapter 08

The night before I left for Apex Point Station, I deep-cleaned the apartment and took the trash out.

Someone was crouched in the shadows behind the dumpster.

My pulse spiked — I lived alone, and the neighborhood wasn’t exactly safe. But I knew who it was almost instantly. Seven years of loving someone teaches your body to find him before your brain catches up. I could pick Silas out of any crowd from the set of his shoulders.

Sure enough, the comments confirmed it.

[He’s literally CROUCHING behind a dumpster like a stray dog someone PLEASE make her look at him.]

[If she says his name ONCE — just once — he will break. He’ll run to her and it’ll all be over, and they’ll make up and I need this SO BAD.]

His name sat on my tongue. I almost said it — twice — before I swallowed it back down.

I stood still for two heartbeats. Then I tossed the trash, turned around, and walked back inside like I’d seen nothing.

Behind me, something rustled in the corner. A footstep — then silence.

I wasn’t surprised. That was Silas.

He’d rather disappear. Skip class. Crouch in the dark behind a dumpster and let himself rot. Anything — anything at all — before he’d swallow his pride and ask why I left.

[Baby girl TURN AROUND — he’s giving you an opening, he’s RIGHT THERE, just take it PLEASE.]

[My poor, broken boy. Just make up already, I’m BEGGING.]

[How is this girl the FL?? I’m trying to be nice, but she’s either blind or just heartless. He’s literally falling apart and she’s out here acting like nothing happened.]

I stopped walking. My eyes lifted — slowly — and locked onto that last comment.

And for the first time, I answered back.

“I’m not blind. He doesn’t deserve me.”

“Only people brave enough to reach for love deserve to hold it. So why should a coward who can’t even use his words get mine?”

“Why should I run back to a man who won’t even say sorry? Is my worth really that low to all of you?”

Everything I’d been choking on for seven years tore out of me in one breath. I stood there gasping, chest heaving, lighter than I’d felt in years.

The comments blew up.

[Wait WHAT — is this a glitch?? She can SEE us?? Since when can the FL read the comments??]

[Okay but… she’s not wrong?? He never once made her feel loved or safe. And honestly some of those earlier comments were toxic as hell.]

[THANK YOU. The ML stans have been so loud I was scared to say anything, but — forget Chloe for a second — this man acts like speaking costs him blood. It’s infuriating.]

[How did anyone bully this girl with a clear conscience?? To everyone who dragged her earlier — I hope you end up with a partner exactly like Silas. See how YOU like it.]

[Trauma is not a free pass to treat someone like garbage. She gave EVERYTHING for seven years and got nothing back. The ML doesn’t deserve her. Period.]

[Also can we retire the whole “broken people need partners who never give up on them” narrative?? By that logic, broken people don’t need partners, they need therapists. That’s not love, that’s a rehab facility.]

My eyes snagged on that last comment. A laugh broke out of me — real, startled, bright — and something that had been sitting on my chest for seven years finally cracked loose.

That’s right, Silas. I never owed you a thing.
