The 99th Chance I Gave You Chapter 07

And Nathaniel Fenton would never find this place.

“Eleanor, I’m truly glad you’re willing to join Whitmore & Shaw LLP.”

My arrival made Professor Whitmore emotional.

When I was in school, I had been one of the students he thought most highly of.

Other than my senior, Alexander Shaw, no one had more potential than I did.

But after I got together with Nathaniel, I turned down Professor Whitmore’s suggestion to come to Edinburgh with him.

I also gave up the path he had planned for me before he left.

Before leaving, he looked at me seriously, his eyes filled with regret and disappointment.

“Eleanor Hart, you shouldn’t trap yourself inside a marriage. You were meant to have a much bigger world.’

Luckily, it still wasn’t too late to turn back.

Luckily, everything was still in time.

“I’ve already sent over the divorce settlement agreement. I’ll have Alexander handle this case for you. I guarantee it’ll be… fair.”

When he said that last word, Professor Whitmore, who rarely showed emotion, visibly went cold.

I smiled and winked at Alexander Shaw.

“Then I’ll have to trouble you to work hard, senior. Once I get the money, I’ll take everyone on

vacation.”

Seeing that I had regained a bit of the playfulness I had back in school, Professor Whitmore’s tense expression finally eased.

“Come on. I’ll show you around the firm first.”

But I didn’t expect to see Nathaniel again so soon.

On my first official day at work, I saw Nathaniel standing downstairs from the firm.

At first, I could barely believe it.

I looked several times before confirming I wasn’t seeing things.

Nathaniel looked much more haggard, as if he might collapse at any moment, but he still stubbornly waited by the entrance and refused to leave.

The moment he saw me, he walked toward me immediately.

Instinctively, I stepped back and put distance between us.

Noticing my distance, hurt appeared on his face.

“Ellie, don’t be angry. I was wrong.”

“These past 2 years, the reason I paid too much attention to Sylvia was because I saw you from 9 years ago in her. I mistook that for liking her.”

“But only after you left did I realize it wasn’t real. The person I loved in my heart was always you.”

I looked at him, fighting waves of nausea.

And his deep confession continued, as if saying it sincerely enough could wash him clean.

“I saw everything you did all these years. Maybe you performed too well at work, and it made me feel pressured. I started to feel like you had changed.”

“You became too rational, too strong. Like a cold machine.”

“So when Sylvia appeared, I instinctively got close to her. It felt like I was seeing you from when we

first met again…”

“Ellie, I don’t want a divorce. I don’t want to lose you. For the sake of me overcoming my fear of flying and coming to Edinburgh myself, can you give me another chance?”

By the end, tears fell from Nathaniel’s eyes.

But all I felt was cold.

This was the man I had once loved.

He had clearly fallen for someone else, yet he still needed to find a respectable excuse for his

betrayal.

He even wanted to push the reason onto me.

Because I was strong and rational, he said I had changed.

Because I made him feel pressured, he fell for Sylvia.

All the traits he had once praised to the sky had now become his reasons for betraying me.

How ridiculous.

“Wrong is wrong. When you do something wrong, you face the consequences.”

“If one sorry could erase betrayal, what would we need the law for?”

“Nathaniel Fenton, we’re over.”

After saying that, I walked around him and into Whitmore & Shaw LLP.

Nathaniel didn’t keep pestering me.

He knew my personality.

Once I made a decision, I never turned back.

But I still saw him standing downstairs from the firm for an entire day.

He didn’t care how passersby looked at him.

He didn’t care about the Edinburgh rain falling on him.

But what meaning did any of that have?

Some feelings, once missed, were simply missed.

In these 2 years, I had given him 99 chances.

He didn’t catch a single one.

A man like that didn’t deserve forgiveness.
