Liam never argued.

He would just hold a baby close, a goofy grin on his face, and say that this was the most important project of his life.

On the day the children turned one month old, Liam had a surprise for me.

He had booked the entire Disneyland park in Anaheim for the night.

As fireworks exploded in dazzling colors over Sleeping Beauty’s castle, he got down on one knee in front of me once again.

This time, he wasn’t holding a ring.

“Ava,” he said, looking up at me, “the first time we got married, I signed the most arrogant document of my life. Today, I want to sign a different one.”

He opened the folder and turned to a specific page.

It was a revised amendment to the family trust.

The new clause was written in clear, unambiguous language.

Ava Walker, as the permanent partner of Liam Walker, would hold co-equal and ultimate decision-making authority over the entire Walker family trust.

My name was placed right beside his.

No conditions. No hierarchy.

“Ava, will you sign?” he asked. “Not as an attachment. Not as a role to be filled. But as my partner, standing right here beside me.”

I looked at him, then at the four sleeping babies in the arms of their grandparents nearby, and at the fireworks still painting the night sky.

I took the pen he offered and signed my name on the line.

Ava Walker.

He smiled.

I smiled back.

Beneath the shower of glittering fireworks, he pulled me into his arms and whispered in my ear.
