I didn’t swallow the hurt this time. Not like before.

“Yeah. Just a formality,” I said. “From paperwork to judge’s ceremony. Thirty minutes. Tops. Ten years together and you couldn’t spare thirty minutes for me. But Sadie asks, and you’re there the same day.”

“You’re the one who suggested the courthouse. And you stood me up. I waited all day. You think I shouldn’t be angry?”

Julian went quiet. I’d never pushed back like this.

Then his voice turned sharper.

“Vanessa. Stop being unreasonable. I told you. This was an emergency. What was I supposed to do? Watch ICE deport Sadie back to some Eastern European backwater? Ruin her life?”

“Think about how many resources we’ve invested getting her up to speed here. I’m protecting company talent. You’re telling me that’s wrong?”

I nearly laughed.

Half the company had visa issues. Julian wasn’t marrying every single one of them. Just Sadie. And talent? She couldn’t use Google Calendar. She flooded the wrong Slack channels. Six months in, not a single sales conversion.

If any other employee had a zero performance record, Julian would’ve had HR in their cubicle by lunch. Fill out a reimbursement form wrong, and you’re gone.

But Sadie? He believed she was “still adjusting.” Called her “underestimated potential.” Said when a real crisis hit, she’d be the secret weapon.

The only reason she still had a job was because Julian kept reassigning my project results under her name. Propping up her performance reviews.

He probably didn’t even notice it himself. The way he favored Sadie was pure instinct now. Hardwired. A bias he couldn’t see but couldn’t stop.

“You’re right,” I said. “You didn’t do anything wrong. I did.”

Julian took that as surrender. His voice tipped into smugness.

“Finally. Now delete the Story. Apologize to Sadie. Do you have any idea what this looks like to the rest of the office—”

“You made a mistake,” I cut in. “I’m the mistake. I should’ve dumped you years ago.”

“Vanessa. You’re being impossible. Fine. Be stubborn. You’ll regret this.”

He hung up.

A notification popped up. He’d kicked me off our shared Spotify family plan. Then our couple’s profile picture vanished from WhatsApp.

This was his move. Every time he got mad, he severed all our digital ties. Pressure tactics. Make me crawl back.

But I was exhausted. No energy to soothe his ego this time.

I was about to lock my phone when Sadie posted in a public Slack channel.

“Just finished handling some life-changing business. Thanks for all the love. And @Vanessa, don’t get the wrong idea. J was just helping me solve a minor visa issue. Purely professional support.”

Julian replied immediately.

“Sadie, you don’t owe anyone an explanation. The person who should be apologizing is whoever twisted an act of kindness into something ugly.”

The office sycophants piled on.

“Exactly. Sadie, congrats on the paperwork. Someone’s just jealous J treats his team well.”

“J’s so human about this stuff. Where else are you gonna find a boss like that?”

I’d gotten used to it. Ever since Sadie joined the company and Julian started favoring her, the snakes fell in line. Kiss up, kick down. Whisper behind my back.

Their words didn’t even sting anymore.

I shut off my phone.

The security guard gave me a sympathetic look.

“Ma’am, you’ve been here all day. The person you were waiting for never showed?”

“We’re closed now. Maybe try again tomorrow?”

I shook my head.

“He married someone else. He’s not coming. And tomorrow, neither am I.”

I looked down at the number ticket in my hand. The first one in the door. The last one to leave.

I ripped it in half. Dropped it in the trash.

I was done waiting for a man who never showed. Done waiting for a wedding that would never happen. Done wanting a love that never loved me back.
