The day I locked in a hundred-million-dollar Series A for the company, my CEO boyfriend finally agreed to marry me.

He’d been stalling for years. But now he said yes. He’d meet me at the county clerk’s office.

I showed up at the Travis County Courthouse before the doors even opened. I waited.

And waited.

The courthouse closed. I was still standing there alone. Julian never showed.

Instead, I got an Instagram Story notification. His assistant Sadie.

“OMG my H-1B got denied. ICE gave me two weeks to leave the country. My boss Julian is literally an angel. He couldn’t bear to lose his “key talent” so he just took me to the courthouse and married me. Green card marriage. He’s not just my boss anymore. He’s my lawfully wedded husband.”

The photo showed her and Julian outside the Williamson County Courthouse. The next county over. They were holding up a marriage license. A judge stood behind them, smiling at the camera.

They’d done the whole ceremony.

The paper was blindingly white.

My coworkers blew up the private Slack. Waiting for me to lose it. Waiting for the meltdown.

I took a screenshot. Posted it to my own Instagram Story. Tagged her.

“Congratulations. A green card marriage. I can’t wait for the USCIS interview. Need me to help you rehearse your “couple chemistry”? Also, when’s the wedding? I’ll make sure to pick something off your West Elm registry.”

Julian called within seconds. His voice was ice.

“I married Sadie for practical reasons. Her work visa didn’t go through. ICE issued a removal order. I couldn’t just watch them deport her. The company can’t lose her. This is a legal formality. It’s not like I’m actually going to live with her. You’re blowing this way out of proportion.”

He paused. I could hear him breathing.

“You have one minute. Delete the Story. Then send Sadie an apology text. Once her green card interview is over, I’ll divorce her. Then I’ll marry you.”

My voice came out flat.

“Don’t bother. We’re done.”

Silence.

Then Julian Croft’s voice hardened.

“Vanessa. How many times do I have to explain this?”

“I told you. Sadie and I are just going through a legal process. It’s a green card marriage. That’s it. Why are you being so petty about this?”

“I already promised you. We’re next. What else do you want from me?”

“You don’t throw the word breakup around like it’s nothing. There’s a line.”

I gripped my phone. Stared at the empty courthouse hallway. Just me and a security guard.

For ten years, marrying Julian had been my endgame. My Pinterest wedding board had over a thousand pins. I had Save the Date designs ready. I’d already researched photographers. Our outfits. Even scouted a vineyard venue in the Texas Hill Country.

I could’ve launched the whole thing the second he said yes.

But every time I tried to move things forward, he used the company as an excuse. Said we were at a critical stage. Said to wait until the Series A was finalized.

So I waited. And to keep his company stable, I took on every impossible project as COO. Worked myself into the ground. Lived on caffeine and delivery food.

Then the company stabilized. He said he wasn’t ready for the responsibility of a family. Said to wait a little longer.

I waited ten years.

Yesterday, after I led the deal that brought in over a hundred million in Series A funding, he finally agreed. Called it my “reward.”

I actually believed my waiting was over. I couldn’t sleep all night. Took a full day off work. Got to the courthouse first thing in the morning.

I waited until the doors locked. Julian never came.

Instead, Sadie Reed posted that Instagram Story.

They’d driven to the next county over to avoid me. Found a judge. Completed the entire legal process.

In the photo, that marriage license looked like a blade. Driven straight into my chest.

Julian hadn’t been “not ready.”

He just didn’t want to marry me.
