The One Chosen to Die Chapter 06

The One Chosen to Die Chapter 06

When my sister fainted, no one was there to catch her.

She fell straight down, and her forehead hit the doorframe, leaving a streak of blood.

Linda screamed and rushed over. David was still holding my body, unmoving, as if he hadn’t heard anything.

It was Mary who helped Bella up.

She carried her into the room, laid her on the bed, wiped the blood from her forehead with a wet cloth,

and covered her with a blanket.

Linda followed beside her, flustered. She was crying so hard that she couldn’t speak clearly.

I stood in the corner, watching.

I was already dead, but when I saw my sister’s pale face, I still felt a pang.

When my sister woke up, it was already noon.

Sunlight came through the window and fell on her face, making her pale skin look almost transparent.

Linda sat by the bed, holding her hand. The moment she saw her open her eyes, tears fell again.

“Bella, you’re awake,” Linda’s voice was hoarse and broken. “It’s good that you’re okay… It’s good that

you’re okay…”

Bella froze for a moment, as if recalling what had happened.

Her eyes widened. She grabbed Linda’s wrist.

“Where is my sister? Where is Clara?”

Linda opened her mouth. Her tears fell harder, but she couldn’t say a word.

Bella didn’t wait for an answer.

She threw off the blanket, jumped out of bed barefoot, and ran out of the room.

Linda called after her, but she didn’t seem to hear.

In the living room, David was still sitting on the ground.

After bringing my body out of the basement, he had stayed there, holding me.

My head rested in the crook of his arm. Bits of hay were still stuck in my hair.

His eyes stared straight ahead, his pupils unfocused.

“Dad,” Bella ran over and kneeled before him. “Dad, what happened to Clara?”

David didn’t look at her.

He lowered his head and looked at me in his arms.

Suddenly, he smiled, one that made my back feel cold.

“She’s fine,” his voice was very soft, very gentle. It was a kind of gentleness I had never heard before.

“Clara is just asleep. When the full moon comes, her wolf spirit will return, and she will wake up.”

Bella froze.

Then her tears burst out, not slowly, but all at once.

“Dad!” she cried. “Clara is dead! Her wolf spirit is gone! Can’t you smell it?”

“There’s no wolf spirit left in her body! Not at all!”

David’s smile disappeared.

His face twisted. He suddenly raised his head, his eyes full of bloodshot veins. “You’re lying!”

Bella shrank back in fear.

“She’s not dead!” David pulled me closer into his arms.

“She’s just asleep! Don’t make noise here! You’ll wake her! Get out! Get out!”

His voice turned into a roar, like a wounded beast.

Bella collapsed onto the ground, covering her mouth. She cried so hard that she could barely breathe, her shoulders shaking.

Mary walked out of the kitchen, carrying a bowl of hot soup.

She didn’t say anything, walking up to David and crouching down.

She set the bowl on the ground, then reached out and began to pry his arms away from me.

However, David refused to let go.

“Mom,” his voice trembled with sobs, “Mom, Clara isn’t dead. She really isn’t…”

Mary didn’t stop. She pried his fingers apart one by one, using a strength that didn’t match her age.

“She is dead,” Mary said calmly.

“You locked her in there for a whole night. The basement is cold and damp.

“She was already weak. She couldn’t endure it.”

David’s whole body began to shake violently. He shook his head, repeating over and over, “I didn’t know it would be like this… I didn’t know… I just wanted her not to bother Bella… I didn’t know…”

Mary looked at him with pain in her eyes, but more than that, there was disappointment.

“She called out,” she said. “She cried for her mother, saying her heart hurt. You heard her, but you just didn’t believe her.”

David’s mouth hung open. Tears and mucus covered his face. He couldn’t say a word.

Linda rushed out of the room and fell at Mary’s feet, grabbing her legs as she cried.

“Mom, I was wrong, I was wrong… I was the one who locked her in…

“I thought she was pretending… I didn’t know she really… I didn’t know…”

Mary lowered her head and looked at Linda crying on the ground, Bella collapsed nearby, and David, who was still holding my body.

Her lips moved as if she wanted to say something.

Then she raised her head and looked straight in my direction.

Her pupils tightened slightly.

I froze.

Could she see me?
