When we arrived at the clinic, Bianca was sitting in the lobby.

She looked perfectly put together, with her makeup done and every detail of her outfit in place.

Even so, the worry in her eyes was impossible to miss.

The moment she saw me, she stood and forced a smile.

“Laurel. I’m here to talk business.” She stepped closer.

“You help me get back in with Winston, and your clinic gets a very generous investment.”

“After that, we stay out of each other’s way.”

She smiled, all persuasion. “Win-win. Right?”

She kept pressing, patient and persistent in that calculating way of hers.

Looking at her now, I just felt tired.

“Bianca. The saddest thing about you is you still think everyone’s got a price. That people can be bought.”

Cade stepped forward and dropped a stack of papers on the table without a word. The sound cut through the room.

“Three years ago, you got me drunk and staged the whole affair.”

He looked at her coldly.

“And every fake campaign you ran under Sterling Group’s name these past three years—it’s all here.”

Her face flickered.

He didn’t stop. “Winston’s lawyers filed for asset preservation this afternoon.”

“Every account, every property in your name? Frozen. Two hours ago.”

He stared at her. “So tell me—what exactly are you planning to invest with?”

All the color drained from Bianca’s face.

She snatched out her phone, fingers shaking as she checked. Notification after notification popped up—Frozen. Frozen. Frozen.

That polished mask of hers cracked wide open.

“No. That’s impossible.” Her voice shook. “Winston would never—”

She collapsed into the chair, lips trembling.

For the first time, she looked genuinely terrified.

I watched her. “You really thought you could do all that and just… walk away clean?”

She had no answer.

I turned toward the door. “Go. Don’t dirty my clinic.”

Later, I heard that after Winston’s leg healed, he left Kingston City.

He cut off the Tourism Division, handed the company over to professional management, and left the country.

He took a logistics post at a remote medical station in a war zone.

Every year on my birthday, he’d have someone deliver lupines to the valley.

Every year, I sent them back. The first year, the second, the third—and then they stopped.

He’d finally learned to let go.

No wedding gown. No photographers. No grand ceremony—just me in a traditional ranch dress.

Cade rode up on his old black horse to bring me home.

The whole village turned out. Everyone wept as they presented us with a special gift.

Outside the wedding tent, Cade stood before me with reddened eyes.

He fastened the new bead bracelet around my neck, his voice thick.

“Laurel. I learned something this time.”

“What?” I smiled.

He lowered his head and kissed my forehead.

“How to use my words.” A laugh escaped him.

“From now on, whatever’s on my mind, I’ll say it.”

His arms tightened. “I’m never letting you go to a hospital alone again.”

I lifted my hand and touched the corner of his eye.

“Cade. I learned something too.”

His gaze softened. “What did you learn?”

I smiled. “How to look back.”

Many years later, I returned to Kingston City on a business trip.

I passed by the old villa. It had been sold long ago.

The lupine in the garden were still blooming.

A little girl crouched among the flowers.

She looked up at me. “What are these flowers called?”

I crouched down and touched her hair.

I said. “That’s lupine. When they bloom, they cover everything.”

I looked out at the sea of flowers, stirred by the wind.

“Sometimes you can lose almost everything. But when you see these flowers…” I smiled at her. “You remember the world can still be good.”

The little girl smiled.

I stood up and walked out of the garden.

The wind brushed past me. The beads clicked softly against my chest.

I looked up. The sky was a brilliant blue.

And this time, I didn’t look back.
