For that proposal, I’d pulled all-nighters in secret for two straight weeks, hiding it from Winston.

I revised it more than twenty times.

In the conference room, the board members paged through my proposal, their eyes filled with admiration.

Seated at the head of the table, Winston wore his usual gentle, considerate expression.

Then he spoke, “Laurel’s proposal is outstanding. There isn’t a single flaw in it.”

He paused. “But as you’re all aware, her health has been fragile these past couple of years.”

“She’s still on medication and in treatment, trying to conceive.”

He smiled lightly.

“The Director role comes with a lot of pressure and responsibility.”

“As her husband, I don’t want to see her carrying that kind of burden.”

The room fell silent for a moment.

Then laughter and agreement spread around the table.

Across the long conference table, Winston looked at me.

His eyes were full of tenderness.

“Let’s give this opportunity to someone who needs it more.”

Just like that. With one sentence.

The comeback I’d fought so hard for was dead on arrival.

My chance at rebuilding my career was sentenced to death by his so-called concern.

The person who ultimately received the position instead of me was Chloe Miller.

Everyone in the company knew that Chloe was Bianca’s closest friend.

What I never saw coming was that the three years I’d poured my heart into loving Winston—everything I’d sacrificed—had all been a joke.

In this silent war between me and his ex-wife, I couldn’t even compete with Bianca’s best friend.

“What are you thinking about?” Winston’s voice pulled me back to reality.

“You’re miles away.”

Naturally, he reached over to tuck a loose strand of hair behind my ear.

I turned away, dodging his touch. His hand froze in midair.

A flicker of displeasure crossed his eyes. It vanished almost instantly.

As always, he slipped back behind his patient, doting facade.

“Laurel, don’t be mad.” His tone was soft. “You don’t need to work so hard. Just enjoy being my wife.”

I raised my head. The decision was final. “Winston. I want a divorce.”

The smile faded from his face.

He studied me for a long moment. Then, he just let out a weary sigh.

“Stop it.” He rubbed his brow.

“I’ve had a long day. Let’s not argue right now. Once I finish this conference call, you’ll see things differently.”

Suddenly, I laughed.

He didn’t believe I would leave. Not for a second.

In his eyes, I was nothing more than a replacement whose career he’d already gutted.

Without him, where would I even go? Who else would take me?
