The Alpha Who Threw Me Away for a Ghost Chapter 08

The elevator paused on the first floor, and Selene stepped in, carrying a stack of mail she had just fetched.

The moment she entered, I immediately dropped Kael’s hand, suddenly feeling incredibly self-conscious about acting affectionate right in front of his older sister.

Fortunately, Kael merely offered me a quiet glance before smoothly transitioning into casual small talk with Selene about the weather.

As they chatted, Selene thrust her phone screen directly in front of my face, eager to show me the latest pack gossip circulating online.

Suddenly, Kael spoke up. “Hey, Selene.”

“What?” Selene snapped impatiently, not looking up from her screen.

“How did you know I paid my taxes today?” Kael asked, his face a picture of absolute innocence.

Selene frowned in confusion. “What taxes are you talking about?”

My heart violently dropped into my stomach. Just as I reached out to muffle the mouth of this giant loudmouth—

Kael had already whipped out the certificate, holding it up against the elevator lights to admire it repeatedly with blatant vanity.

“Holy shit!” Selene shrieked, her jaw dropping. “You two actually got legally bound?!”

Ding.

The elevator doors slid open.

Standing right outside, prepared to head out for an afternoon stroll, were Kael’s parents.

The five of us stood frozen, staring at one another in absolute silence.

Finally, Kael’s mother broke the thick tension with a warm, hesitant smile. “Who exactly got bound?”

An hour later, Kael’s parents marched him directly into the Silver Moon pack house to formally beg for forgiveness.

First, they expressed their deep regrets over Kael’s impulsive, unauthorized actions.

Then, Kael stepped forward to deliver an incredibly earnest, heartfelt speech regarding his devotion, meticulously laying out his entire savings, his future inheritance, and even offering to sign a comprehensive prenuptial agreement.

During his vow, he swore that if he were ever unfaithful to me, he would willingly submit to a pack tribunal and leave with absolutely nothing—subtly but viciously throwing shade at a certain former Alpha.

My parents were still hesitating, feeling that Kael was a bit too young and still acted like an overgrown kid.

But Selene jumped into the fray as a passionate wingwoman, hyping her brother up as the future hope of the werewolf race, a literal genius in the research community, and the absolute gold standard of loyalty and devotion.

Most importantly, the legal mating was already a done deal.

Ultimately, my parents chose to respect my wishes, sitting down with Kael’s parents to discuss the logistics of holding a proper ceremony.

“There’s no need,” I interrupted gently.

I wanted to do a destination mating trip instead.

It wasn’t because I was traumatized by the concept of a wedding; I simply felt that since we were starting fresh, we should make a clean, absolute break from tradition.

Kael didn’t argue for a second. “Whatever you want.”

I found out much later that in order to secure enough time off from the research facility, he had agreed to work for his mentor entirely for free for the next six months.

The day we set off on our road trip, the sky was completely clear and beautiful.

Kael mentioned that if we made good time to our destination, the sunrise over the mountains would be spectacular.

I dozed off in the passenger seat, faintly registering the sound of him turning up the car heater before gently draping his jacket over my shoulders.

In my hazy, half-awake state, I thought I heard him softly ask if I would ever regret this.

Whether I would regret it or not, I couldn’t say for certain.

But I knew one thing with absolute clarity: I had never lacked the courage to start over.

And this time, the wolf by my side possessed clear, unclouded eyes and razor-sharp fangs—and they bared strictly for me alone.
