The Comments Said My Dead Officer Husband Had Returned Chapter 01

It was the third year of being a widow when I suddenly started seeing comments before my eyes.

I was busy washing diapers that day when Mrs. Higgins next door popped over again under the pretense of showing “concern.”

“Madeline, it’s been three years since your husband died. You’re not thinking of marrying again?”

I smiled and said nothing.

Then a line of text exploded in front of my eyes:

[LMAO this side character really thinks she’s a widow? The male lead Elias Wellington is alive and well!]

My hand slipped and the diaper fell into the sink.

[She’s still living in blissful ignorance. Elias never died. The female lead Celeste Perez is about to lock him down!]

[Yesterday, Celeste went to give Elias ointment and wanted to apply it herself. He said no, but the way he looked at her was so soft.]

[Once Celeste wins him over, Madeline will end up struggling to get by with her kids.]

I shot to my feet.

I didn’t mind being a widow.

But my kids’ formula money? Not a single penny less.

I packed that night, shoved the twins into a backpack carrier, one on each side, and took a three-day train ride to my husband’s military base.

As the guards stopped me at the entrance, my supposedly dead-for-three-years husband was standing in the garden, tangled up with a young nurse.

Blood rushed straight to my head.

“Elias!”

My loud shout instantly hushed the entire garden.

Elias looked up from his conversation with the nurse.

The moment he saw me, he froze like someone had hit him from behind. Then he frowned and walked over, looking down at me.

Three years had passed since we last met.

He looked tanner and leaner, with a fresh scar cutting across his right eyebrow. His shoulders had grown far broader than before.

His Adam’s apple bobbed up and down slowly. “What are you doing here?”

His tone was utterly plain and emotionless.

I knitted my brows, burning with rising fury. “I mourned you for three years. And you’re alive? About to marry someone new?”

His frown deepened. “What are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about her.” I pointed at the woman by the flower bed. “Is she your new lover?”

He looked where I was pointing, then back at me. “She’s a nurse at the base hospital.”

“Oh, a nurse. A special kind of nurse, I guess. You have time to mess around with her but not to write me one letter saying you’re alive?”

The kids clung tightly to my sides, clearly sensing my towering anger.

Ava leaned into my leg, her little voice trying to soothe me. “Mommy, don’t be mad. Let me blow your anger away.”

That calmed me down a little. I bent and picked her up.

Elias didn’t say anything. He just stared at the kids.

They were a mess. Jayden’s coat had a hole in it, stuffing poking out. Ava’s braid was half undone, her face streaked with dirt. They’d spent three days on the train without having a proper meal.

Elias looked at them for a long time.

Then he raised his eyes to mine and asked a question that made my brain go completely blank. “Whose are they?”

I thought I had misheard him. “What did you just say?”

“I’m asking you, who is the father of these two children?”
