My Unfazed Mind Saves Me Chapter 04

The gunman had been focused on Victor the whole time. He never saw me coming.

He hadn’t expected me to fight like that. Something in me had switched on, and there was no shutting it off.

The blade dug into his skin, and he cracked. Spilled everything.

He gave up the name behind the hit, and Victor’s men dragged him out. Victor was quiet for a long time.

“Weren’t you afraid of getting shot?”

I lit up inside. Finally — he was giving me lines.

I stayed in character, letting my voice go low and steady. “Nobody gets to touch you. Except me.”

Victor held my gaze for a beat, then smiled. “You’re hired.”

I went home and waited for the call — the one telling me when filming started. What showed up instead was a formal marriage proposal from Victor Sterling.

My parents read it three times. They checked the Sterling family crest twice to make sure it was real.

The whole family stared at me. Stella’s jaw nearly hit the floor.

I’d come home in one piece — again. She cornered me afterward, barely keeping it together. “Did you actually pull out the knife?”

“Pulled it out and nailed it,” I said. “Best improv of my life.”

The look on her face was pure despair.

Victor’s reputation was terrifying, but his power was undeniable. He owned Bayridge in everything but name.

Half the wealthy families in the country would’ve killed for a marriage alliance with the Sterlings. This proposal was a golden ticket, and it had landed right in our laps.

Still, my parents asked what I wanted.

I didn’t even look up. “Sure.”

We’d only met twice, but I liked him just fine. He saw real talent in me — that counted for a lot. You don’t meet someone who gets you every day.

My parents accepted, and the Sterlings set the engagement date shortly after. Word got out fast.

Families lined up to congratulate us, each one angling for a connection. The gifts filled an entire room.

Stella was practically vibrating with jealousy. She spent every day whispering horror stories in my ear.

“Chloe, you have no idea what you’re walking into. Victor doesn’t think twice about hurting people — even the ones closest to him. You’re walking straight into a death trap!”

“Honestly, you should back out. But since we can’t refuse the Sterlings… I’ll take one for the team. I’ll go in your place.”

My eyes went wide. “Are you crazy? If it’s really that dangerous, there’s no way I’m letting you go instead. You’re my sister!”

Stella looked like she was about to have an aneurysm.

The day of the engagement arrived.

The Sterlings held it at their private estate. Hundreds of guests, every powerful name in Bayridge. I waited in a room upstairs. Victor and I would walk out together when it was time.

Before long, everyone else cleared out. It was just Stella and me.

She stared at me for a moment, then stepped forward with a little bottle and a smile.

“So I did some digging. Turns out Victor has a sweet tooth, but he’d never admit it in public. He usually sneaks something sweet into his drinks. With this many guests, he won’t want to be seen doing it himself — so you pour this in for him. Simple syrup. He’ll love you for it.”

I took it without a second thought. She stood right there and watched me pour it into Victor’s glass.

Stella smiled to herself and walked out.

Victor arrived moments later, and we headed downstairs to the hall together. He took the glass from my hand and raised it to his lips.

Stella burst out of nowhere, eyes wild. “Don’t drink that! It’s poisoned!”

The room erupted. Victor’s expression darkened. “How do you know it’s poisoned?”

Stella pointed straight at me. “Because I watched her put something in it!”

She pulled up surveillance footage on the big screen. There I was, on camera, pouring a small bottle of clear liquid into the wine glass.

Victor’s face went cold. His hand locked around my wrist like a vise.

I gasped from the pain. Bodyguards materialized from every corner of the hall and closed in around me.

Every guest in the room wore the same expression — pity, like they were already attending my funeral.

Stella wasn’t done. “I found the bottle in the trash. It tested positive for a lethal toxin — one sip and it would shut down your organs. You’d be dead in minutes.”

“How could you do something like this, Chloe?”

She barely finished the sentence before a gasp rippled through the crowd.

On the screen, the footage kept playing. After pouring the liquid in, I leaned over the glass, mumbling to myself. “Will it actually taste sweet? One little sip — nobody’s gonna notice, right?”

Then, on screen, I picked up the glass and drank from it.

In the hall, right on cue, my vision went dark. I went down.

My family came running. “Chloe!”

Victor caught me before I hit the floor. His face was white. “Get a doctor. Now!”
