My Unfazed Mind Saves Me Chapter 03

Victor’s invitation came with a time and place — this weekend for dinner, a restaurant. The whole family spiraled.

Victor ran Bayridge, and his temper was nightmare fuel. Someone once said the wrong thing at dinner, and Victor bankrupted the man before dessert.

And me? If someone held a knife to my throat, I’d probably smile and tell them it looked really realistic.

My father paced hard enough to wear a groove into the floor. My mother cried. My brother kept sighing.

Only Stella stood in the corner with her hand over her mouth, barely hiding a grin. She was sure Victor had figured out what really happened and was summoning me there to make me disappear.

I didn’t see the problem.

“I’m going to an audition. You should all be excited for me.”

Stella jumped in before anyone could object. “She’s right, it really is an audition. And honestly? If it goes well, Mr. Sterling might even open a few doors for her. Besides, he already sent the invitation — we can’t exactly say no.”

And she was right about that last part. Nobody refused Victor.

The Bennetts were based elsewhere in the country, but they had plenty of business interests in Bayridge. Crossing Victor would sink every last one.

After going back and forth, my family gave in. They grabbed my hands. “Chloe, please — think before you speak in there.”

I nodded. Of course I’d bring my A-game — I wasn’t about to blow another audition!

That evening, right before I headed out, Stella pulled me aside. She slipped something into my hand — a small folding blade prop.

She leaned in like she was sharing a secret. “It’s a prop. I got it made just for you. I heard the project is an action movie — if you pull this out during the audition, he’ll be seriously impressed.”

I squeezed her hand. “You thought of everything. I won’t let it go to waste!”

She watched me leave. The second I was out of earshot, Stella laughed. “How foolish of her.. Pull a blade on Victor? She’ll be finished for good.”

I arrived at the private dining room a little early. Victor was already there.

He waved me to a seat and handed me the menu.

“Anything’s fine with me,” I said. “But when do we start the audition?”

He looked up from the menu. He searched my face for any sign of a joke. There wasn’t one.

His eyebrows lifted — genuine curiosity this time. He’d never met anyone this far removed from basic survival instinct.

He set the menu down. “Then let’s start now.”

I glanced around. None of the guys from the dark room — the ones who’d played the bodyguards last time — were here. It was just the two of us.

He must have wanted me to do a scene with him. No script either. Full improv.

Stella’s words came back to me — action movie.

I pulled the folding blade prop from my pocket and pointed it toward Victor. I dropped my voice, narrowed my eyes, and let every trace of warmth drain from my face.

“Victor. Today is the day you die.”

The amusement dropped from Victor’s face. His hand moved swiftly, reaching for the weapon at his side.

Before he could draw, the door burst open. A man rushed inside, holding a weapon pointed right at Victor.

“Victor, today is the day you die!”

I froze. Wait. That was my line.

Was this guy stealing my scene? Couldn’t he see I wasn’t done?

Victor’s blood went cold. Every instinct snapped into kill mode. First the knife, now this.

He was already calculating whether I was working with the intruder. His fingers closed around the grip. He’d put us both down if he had to.

Then I moved — faster than he expected. I slammed the attacker to the floor before the man could blink.

I kicked the weapon aside, pressed my knee into his back, and held the folding blade near his neck.

“Talk. Who sent you?”
