My Fiancé’s Confession From the Future Chapter 04

My Fiancé’s Confession From the Future Chapter 04

I kept asking for three days before he finally told me, word by word.

“When you were five months pregnant, I was busy helping Jessica prepare her company’s IPO. You were taking care of yourself alone.”

“Jessica found out you were pregnant and panicked. She was afraid that once you had a child, your position would be even more secure, and she would never have a chance to take your place.”

“So she switched out the medication you were taking during your pregnancy.”

“The day you were rushed to the ER with massive bleeding, I was celebrating her birthday with her.”

“You lost the baby at seven months. On the ultrasound, you could already see the face clearly.”

“It was a girl.”

“You had already given her a name. Hope Winters.”

I pressed my hand against my stomach.

It wasn’t showing yet, but this child was already real.

At four in the morning, I drove alone to a private hospital.

“I want to terminate the pregnancy.”

“Ms. Walsh, you’re already three months along. The fetus is healthy. Are you sure?”

I closed my eyes. “I’m sure.”

After the procedure, I folded the prenatal report and tucked it into my pocket, close to my chest.

That afternoon, I put my parents on a flight heading south.

My father laughed and tapped my nose.

“Didn’t you say you were just sending us off for a little vacation? Why the long face?”

“It’s nothing. I just don’t want to say goodbye.”

I forced a smile.

I watched them pass through security, their figures disappearing down the corridor, before I finally crouched down and cried without making a sound.

That night, I walked into Ethan’s apartment for the last time.

He was sitting in the living room reading a financial report. He looked up and smiled at me.

“You’re back?”

I sat down across from him and studied his face.

“Ethan, if one day I was gone, what would you do?”

He set down the report and cupped my face in both hands.

“What kind of nonsense is that? Where could you possibly go? No matter where you run, I’ll find you.”

He kissed the tip of my nose, his voice certain.

“Serena, don’t leave me.”

He pulled me close, and I buried my face in the curve of his neck.

But he didn’t know this was the last time I would ever lean against him.

And I never wanted him to find me again.

The next morning, I drove to the end of a coastal highway, to a stretch of cliffside boardwalk.

Eight years ago, on a summer day, this was where Ethan first told me he loved me.

I slipped off the diamond ring and placed it on top of the railing, the engraving facing up.

Beside it, I left my phone. On the screen was the last message I had sent to the future Ethan.

“Thank you for telling me everything.”

I took off my shoes and set them neatly at the edge of the cliff.

That evening, Ethan got a call from the coast guard.

“Are you Serena Walsh’s family? She may have had an accident.”

“What happened? What’s wrong with her?”

The moment he heard, he drove like a madman to get there.

The whole way, his mind was filled with fragments.

He hadn’t missed the signs that something was off with Serena these past few days.

She had suddenly gone to visit her parents. Last night, she had said something strange.

Even the way she looked at him had changed. Searching. Uncertain.

But he hadn’t thought much of it.

He assumed it was pre-wedding jitters. He thought it would pass in a few days.

When she asked what he would do if she was gone, he thought she was just being clingy.

He didn’t realize it was a goodbye he had failed to understand.

By the time he reached the cliff, all he found were her shoes at the edge.

On the railing sat the ring. The engraving, J&E, was sharp and clear in the fading sunlight.

He picked it up and stared at the letters, confused.

Below, two rescue boats swept their searchlights slowly across the water. The beams cut through the spray and vanished into the dark swells.

His hand wouldn’t stop shaking as he gripped the ring.

He dropped to his knees beside the railing.

Then her phone rang.

A video call.

He picked it up, dazed, and answered.

On the screen was a face. His own face.

His mind shattered completely.

What was happening? Why was any of this happening?

Why was the ring engraved with J&E?

What had driven her, step by step, to this cliff?
