I Died In The Fire While He Married My Best Friend Chapter 08

Inside was a thick stack of bus tickets and a savings-account ledger.

All the tickets were to Southport. The college he wanted to attend was in Southport.

In the ledger, the deposits came one after another, tens of dollars, then hundreds. Every cent was money she had scraped together from whatever she could save.

At the very bottom was an old, worn sketchbook.

He opened to the first page.

It was a drawing of a house, with huge floor-to-ceiling windows and a carpeted floor.

Beside it was a line of neat handwriting.

[Zachary’s home.]

On the second page, there was a man’s suit.

The design was simple, but every detail was marked with measurements. They were Zachary’s

measurements.

[When he becomes a big-shot businessman, he can wear this to negotiations.]

On the third page was a wedding dress.

There was no complicated lace. It was just a clean white gown.

Beside it, I had written:

[He said he wants to marry me. I’m actually really scared of pain, but if it’s to have his baby, maybe I could do it.]

Zachary turned the pages one by one.

His tears fell onto the paper, blurring the penciled words.

He didn’t dare wipe them away, afraid he would ruin the words. All he could do was rub his eyes messily with his sleeve.

I stood in front of him.

Looking at the future I had once drawn out stroke by stroke, I could only feel how cruelly fate had

played with us.

I wasn’t sad anymore. I had already survived those days.

Only Zachary was still trapped inside a truth that had come too late, being cut to pieces by it.

“It was my fault…” Zachary held the sketchbook and buried his face in its pages.

He cried like a child who couldn’t find his way home.

“I was the one who lost her. I was the one who got her killed.”

He remembered now.

That night, he had meant to come back and look for me.

Olivia had stopped him.

Olivia was the one who said, “She thinks you’re too poor for her. She left with someone else. She’s

not coming back.”

He had given up so easily.

For seven years, he had trampled my dignity and my love under his feet.

Now, his punishment had finally arrived.
