The branch manager was startled by him and hurried to process the request.

Ten minutes later, two thin pages were handed to him.

Zachary lowered his head to read them, his hands shaking so badly he could barely hold the paper.

That money had never been stolen.

Seven years ago, on the day before the fire, every cent in the account had been transferred into a

business account.

It was the account for the shell LLC Zachary had registered during his freshman year of college, an account he had never once checked.

And the so-called wire transfer from an older man was even more absurd.

The transaction record showed it clearly.

It was from the owner of the diner where Serena worked, settling three months of her wages.

It was only twelve hundred dollars.

She hadn’t taken a single cent from him. She had even put in all of her own scholarship money and

wages.

I stood beside him and looked at the statement.

For a moment, I felt dazed. I had almost forgotten.

That year, he wanted to start a company but didn’t have the money to get it off the ground. I kept it from him and worked three jobs in secret.

I wanted to surprise him.

Zachary stared at the twelve-hundred-dollar deposit until the paper crumpled in his fist.

Then he spun around, shoved through the bank’s glass doors, and rushed back to his car.

He drove fast.

His destination was the suburbs, where Ms. Harper lived now.

After the children’s home was closed and demolished, Ms. Harper had moved there.

Zachary pounded on her door.

Ms. Harper’s hair was completely white. When she opened the door and saw him, she froze.

Then she grabbed the broom by the door and swung it hard against his back.

“You still have the nerve to come here?” Ms. Harper’s voice shook.

“You ungrateful bastard! You got married yesterday in front of everyone, with all that money and fanfare, and you forgot Serena completely!”

Zachary didn’t dodge.

He took the blow and dropped to his knees in front of Ms. Harper.

“Ms. Harper.” He lowered his head, his voice shattered. “Serena… Serena is dead.”

The broom fell to the floor.

Ms. Harper trembled all over, and tears poured from her eyes.

“What did you say?”

“She died seven years ago.” Zachary clutched his own hair and knocked his forehead against the rough concrete floor.

“She died in the fire at the science building. I only just found out. I only just learned the truth.”

Ms. Harper swayed and collapsed into a chair.

Covering her face, she burst into sobs.

I walked over, wanting to hug her, but my hand passed through her thin shoulder.

I’m sorry, Ms. Harper. I didn’t get to grow up the way you hoped.

Ms. Harper cried for a long time. Then she stood and went into the back room.

When she came out again, she was holding an old metal box.

“A few days before she disappeared, she left this with me.” Ms. Harper threw the box in front of Zachary, and it struck his knees.

“She said that after high school graduation, I should take it out and show it to you.”

With trembling hands, Zachary opened the box.
