I Died In The Fire While He Married My Best Friend Chapter 04

Everyone froze.

He rubbed his arms, his face turning a little pale.

“Think about it,” he said. “The night the fire broke out was the exact same night she supposedly ran off with someone. In the seven years after that, no one ever saw her again. No one heard a single thing about her. It was like she vanished off the face of the earth.”

Zachary’s face darkened instantly.

He stared coldly at the person who had spoken.

“Lucas Reed, are you drunk?”

“Serena took my money and got into that older man’s car. The school security guard saw it with his own eyes back then! Serena, dead in that fire? She doesn’t deserve to be remembered like some tragic victim.”

Lucas swallowed, but his voice only grew louder.

“I’m not drunk! Actually, back then, I found a plain silver ring at the scene. It had been burned out of shape.”

“That ring looked almost exactly like the one you gave Serena.”

For an instant, the entire private room fell silent.

Olivia’s expression shifted, and she instinctively tightened her grip on Zachary’s arm.

Zachary sat there, his body stiff.

A few seconds later, he gave a cold laugh.

“What does one ruined ring prove?”

“She thought I was poor, tossed the ring into the science building, took the money, and ran. That’s the truth.”

Zachary stood up, his eyes icy.

“Three days ago, I got a call from Serena. She’s alive and well, and she even used a recording of a fire to scare me. Now you’re telling me she’s been dead for seven years?”

“Ridiculous.”

Zachary took Olivia’s hand and strode out of the private room.

I followed behind them.

Floating in midair, I watched the rigid line of Zachary’s back.

He didn’t believe I was dead.

He would rather believe I was a vicious liar than consider the possibility that the charred body could

have been mine.

When we returned to the mansion, Zachary yanked his tie loose.

I stood in front of him and watched the muscle at the corner of his eye twitch faintly.

He took out his phone and pulled up his call history from three days ago.

Then he tapped the unsaved number.

He opened a message window and typed, Zachary: [Serena, what the hell are you doing? Get out

here and face me.]

He tapped Send.

A Not Delivered notice appeared beneath the message.

His brows drew tight.

Then he called the number back.

“We’re sorry. The number you have dialed is no longer in service.”

The automated female voice echoed through the study.

Zachary refused to believe it and called again.

“We’re sorry. The number you have dialed is no longer in service.”

Irritated, he slammed a hand against the desk and called his assistant.

“Look into this. Three days ago at ten p.m., this number called me. Find out who it belonged to and

where that person is now.”

He paced back and forth in the study.

Half an hour later, his assistant called back.

“Mr. Sterling, I found it.”

The assistant’s voice sounded hesitant.

“Tell me.”

“That number was disconnected seven years ago.”

Zachary froze.

“What did you say?”

“The carrier records show that after that summer night seven years ago, the number never connected to another cell tower again. Three months later, it was automatically deactivated and became a disconnected number. Three days ago, it would have been impossible for anyone to call you from that number.”

At that moment, the flat-screen TV mounted on the study wall was still on, playing the local news.

The female anchor’s steady voice came through.

“Breaking news tonight. There has been a major development in the Central High School science building fire from seven years ago.”

“The unidentified female remains recovered from the scene have now been identified through the latest DNA technology.”
