My Coworker Asked About My Secret Husband, I Said Strangers Chapter 03

My Coworker Asked About My Secret Husband, I Said Strangers Chapter 03

Late in the afternoon, Brandon texted me.

[Business dinner tonight.]

This time, I didn’t reply.

That night, I didn’t prepare any hangover tea. I didn’t leave the living room light on for him.

When we were newlyweds, I thought those little things would bring us closer. They felt romantic. I’d even go to the airport to pick him up when he traveled.

I didn’t do any of that anymore.

I was about to fall asleep when I heard rustling outside the bedroom. The door opened, and our eyes met.

I looked away, walked to the bed, and didn’t say a word.

Brandon’s brow furrowed. “Why didn’t you leave the light on?”

“Electricity isn’t free,” I said.

His lips curved into a faint smile. “That frugal?”

I ignored him.

After he showered, I was still awake. His warm palm pressed against my stomach, and his arm wrapped around me from behind.

I instinctively pushed his hand away. He just held on tighter.

His voice dropped low. “Let’s have a baby.”

I went stiff, frozen in place.

That line kept echoing in my head. “Elena and I would have a kid calling me dad by now.”

I pulled his hand off me and scooted back so we were facing each other. “I don’t want a child right now, Brandon.”

He looked surprised.

A year ago, I’d hinted that I wanted a child. Now I was glad we didn’t have any.

I moved to the edge of the bed. There was enough space between us for two more people.

Ever since I’d overheard him, I’d been slowly pulling away.

I woke up at sunrise.

In the morning, when I looked at Brandon, I felt strangely uneasy.

Neither of us said anything. He gave me a long, unreadable look.

I ignored it and walked out.

I used to be stubborn about buying matching cups and toothbrushes, couple items. Seeing them in the bathroom now just made me laugh.

Before he left, Brandon told me he had a business trip. I nodded.

He was gone for a week.

The day before he came back, I was working late. He texted me: [Just landed.]

That was when I realized I hadn’t messaged him in seven days.
