The Dress Fitting He Promised I Would Not Attend Chapter 06

The voice on the other end sounded puzzled.

“Mr. Whitmore, didn’t you already cancel the dress? Miss Hastings paid the cancellation fee.”

“What? When?”

Ethan’s voice trembled, and he didn’t even recognize it as his own.

The receptionist got nervous. “Three… three days ago.”

Three days ago. His grandpa’s birthday.

He hung up without another word, grabbed his keys, and ran for the car.

The car screeched to a stop outside the Whitmore Estate.

“Grandpa!”

He burst into the living room, and Grandpa Arthur swung his cane at him.

“You worthless piece of garbage! Why did you even come back? Are you trying to finish me off?”

Ethan didn’t fight back. He just covered his face.

“Grandpa… please stop. I need to ask you something.”

Grandpa Arthur finally tired himself out and dropped onto the couch, fuming.

“Grandpa, the day of your party… what did Claire say to you? She… she canceled the wedding dress.”

His heart was racing as he asked. As if some terrible answer was about to hit him.

“Hmph. Your fiancée’s been gone for days, and you’re just now noticing the dress?”

Ethan’s stomach dropped.

What did he mean by “gone”?

“Grandpa… what are you talking about?”

Grandpa Arthur slammed the cane against the floor. It made a dull, heavy sound.

“The engagement between the Whitmores and the Hastings is over. Claire ended it herself. Look at what you’ve done.”

His breath caught. His voice shook.

“Over? She ended it? Why? Grandpa, what exactly did she say to you?”

Grandpa Arthur was calmer now.

“What do you think? Why don’t you ask yourself that question? Ever since that little intern showed up, you’ve lost your mind. Do you even remember you have a fiancée?”

Ethan froze.

Claire wanted to call off the engagement because of Lily Vance?

When was she going to grow up?

Anger bubbled up inside him, mixed with something he was trying hard to suppress.

“I never did anything wrong! Grandpa, she’s only like this because you’ve spoiled her. I’m a CEO. Am I not allowed to have my own space? I just—”

Grandpa Arthur’s anger, which he’d barely managed to control, came roaring back.

“You… you shared a hotel room with that assistant in Silverport. Claire told me everything. And you still claim you did nothing wrong? The Whitmore family produced a disgrace like you!”

Ethan’s head snapped to the side from the slap.

Shared a room?

Then he remembered. In Silverport, Lily booked a suite.

Three bedrooms, a living room. He never paid attention to that kind of detail.

How did Claire find out?

“Go ask your precious little assistant what she’s been up to.”

Grandpa Arthur could read his mind.

“Grandpa, where did Claire go?”

He’d had his assistant check. The Hastings’ house was empty.

“She flew to Vancouver that same day. And you’re only asking me now. When she told me she wanted to end it, I tried to talk her out of it. Now I understand why she was so sure. You’ve disgraced this family.”

Vancouver? She’d gone to her parents.

Ethan was furious and hurt at the same time.

Claire had accused him without even knowing the facts.

After all these years, she didn’t trust him at all.

He went back to the office and called Lily in.

“You wanted to see me, Mr. Whitmore?”

She still looked sweet and innocent.

“Have you been posting about me on social media?”
